Specifically, I'm trying to rip video from here: http://hqplayer.nbcsports.com/Player.html?PID=18&vid=2552 but having trouble with most of the typical sites listed. Extremely new to this and hoping someone can point me in the direction of a (preferably free) tool to rip this video. Thanks in advance!

Try the free streamtransport. If it fail you try replay media catcher and getflv.

NONE of the US networks, NONE of them, want you to be able to copy anything. And you are NOT "ripping" video. Ripping means to copy video or audio off a CD, DVD or BluRay disc. That's it. Capturing video from a website is not "ripping".

All of the US networks that do streaming have taken steps to make it very difficult for you to capture their videos. I do not personally know what technology NBC uses, but if they use Silverlight you'll have to use a commercial streaming media recorder like Replay Video Capture. You can try the free tools like Streamtransport, but I expect all of them to fail for you. I'm just being honest here. If it was easy to capture streams from NBC then you wouldn't be posting here asking for help.
