  1. I'm trying save a DVD with subtitles to .avi with AutoGK, but the selected subtitle track is not included in the output. If I use Wondershare DVD Ripper the output does have subtitles, but the interlacing artifacts in that program are pretty nasty, so I want to get this done with AutoGK.

I have attached a screen capture of AutoGK after it finishes processing for preview. You can see that it does prepare the subtitles, and .idx and .sub files are created in the agk_tmp directory. I also tried using external subs, but all I get is a WinRAR not found error even though I have WinRAR installed.

If anyone has previously solved this mystery, your guidance would be greatly appreciated.

When you installed autogk did you choose to install vobsub?

I guess you want burned in subtitles? Or else can you use the idx/sub together with the avi like video.avi and video.sub/video.idx and many players will see the subs automatically.

You could also try fairuse wizard(the free version is enough) or staxrip or handbrake 0.9.4.

  3. Yes, vobsub is installed. I want to burn the subtitles into the avi so I can stream it to devices over the Internet. Thanks for the suggestions. I'll give them a try.

  4. Did you actually play the Preview? No subs in preview means no subs in the final AVI. And did you check out the subs it created to make sure they were OK. The IDX can be opened with Notepad to make sure there are a bunch of timestamps. The subs themselves can be read in SubResynch (comes included in the VobSub package) or SubtitleCreator to check if they're alright.

  5. Yes, and the subs are not visible in the preview. When using other programs that I have there are subs in the output, so they appear to be fine . It's just AutoGK that is missing them. AutoGK creates the highest quality compressed avi output among the programs I have, which is why I would like to solve the problem.

Meanwhile, I have HandBrake cooking up an m4v file right now, based on Baldrick's advice. If that looks good, I won't worry about it anymore.

  6. Handbrake does a stellar job of creating a file with subtitles and no visible interlacing... and 384kbps audio with no channels.

Even if I type <filename>.mp4 in the destination browse window, it puts a .m4v extension in the main window. I have to overwrite the .m4v with .mp4 in the main window. Didn't notice that the first time. Running it again...

  7. Success! With Handbrake, although Quicktime won't play the mp4 but VLC and Media Player will. Go figure.

Thanks to Baldrick for the tip.
