taking stills from video

sorry if in wrong spot, one of those ones i didnt know which section it is meant to go in

i need to take stills from video footage off my hard drive. i used to do it years ago with a program that came with my old computer but i forget what it was. any other video player programs do this feature? i need to be able to stop the video wherever i want and take a still from that.

also, ive asked this before, thought id throw it in again

is there anything similar to orbit out there to download streaming video ( not youtube)? orbit was perfect, till i changed to chrome now it doesnt work on chrome or IE so im stuffed

thanks for that
tried scene grabber and it crashed constantly
vlc and mpc work well however unsure how to make the image as large a file as possible
both were quite small image file sizes

whats the best way to take still and make it as large as i can?
