My dad and I are trying to install OS X 10.5 but we only have a DMG, not the original CD (we have what we do legally though). The problem is, we can't get it to install the system from the DMG. So, we've been looking around at websites that seem to address this kind of issue (such as this one), but they don't give enough explanation, and we've hit a wall. My dad tried to follow through with the Disk Utility bit, but when he stuck the DMG in Toast to burn it, it complained that some parts of the file couldn't be added. Also, it acted like the file was small enough to fit on a CD, when at least according to the sites we've viewed it should require no less space than a DVD DL.

My retail Mac OS X 10.5 Install DVD is 6.86 GiB. If what you have fits on a CD (less than 700 MB), then it's not the complete operating system.

My full install of OS X 10.6 is several DVD discs.
My full install of OS X 10.4 is exactly four DVDs.
What you have isn't an OS install.Want my help? Ask here! (not via PM!)

The footprint of OS X itself is small.
It's just a GUI wrapped around a Linux (Darwin) core.
It's all the other garbage Apple bloats into the OS that makes it so huge. Near-worthless idiot-friendly software like Garage Band, iMovie, iPhoto, etc. It's all really wimpy stripped-down software that lazy users love. ("I can make 3 clicks and it's all done! You have to boot OS X to install it. If you can find some way to convert this DMG file to a bootable ISO maybe it will work. I will warn you that Apple uses a non-standard format for their install DVDs and it is incredibly difficult to copy or burn them. Well, at least for me it was. I was able to make a copy of a boot DVD using Ultraiso under Windows and nothing else. I have an iMac and my burner has NEVER been able to burn dual layer discs correctly (yes, I use only Verbatim DVD+R DL). I tried using OS X tools to copy the DVD to my hard drive and that worked fine, but then I made a coaster when I tried to burn it. Just gave up and went to Ultraiso. By the way, my iMac burner has no problems burning to single layer DVDs including re-writable discs.
Here's a free way to convert DMG to ISO, but you're on your own for burning the ISO.
