I had a .srt file which i added to a mkv file container using mkvmerge and Charset was set to default. And the file was muxed. The subtitles were working fine until this musical character
♪ was replaced with ♪ . The info is below

All those hyper smart subtitle creators tends to use Tahoma - just change to Arial or Verdana .
