The first part of the problem I could solve, which is extracting pgs subtitle files from mkv. MKVExtractGUI 2.2.2.2.5 could do it.

Now I'm facing the second part of the problem: converting the sup files into srt.

From what I could google, including a few threads here in Videohelp, I couldn't find a simple conversion. And the ones I could find seemed not to do a perfect job of it.

So, is there a clean and precise way to make this conversion?

  2. Clean and Precise? Maybe, maybe not. Do you mean an automatic way without you having to perform the OCR? Open the SUP file in DVDSubEdit and let it do the automatic OCR to SRT. Me, I usually first convert SUP to VobSubs (IDX/SUB) in SubtitleCreator followed by an OCR of the VobSubs using SubRip. Either way it's usually a good idea to do some editing afterwards.

  3. I load the ifo/sup files into DVDSubEdit as manono mentioned. But a trick I use is to first load them into BDSup2Sub and change the resolution to 720x480. Export as ifo/sup. DVDSubEdit automatic OCR seems to work a bit better at DVD resolution.

I found SubtitleEdit as the easiest for this conversion

Subtitle Creator can't open sup files: only text types like srt or sub. And DVDSubEdit refuses to show me anything after it's opened the file.

I did the resolution conversion as you suggested. And it does open the the new file in DVDSubEdit, but many texts are unrecognizable.

Let me see if understand this: the sup files are graphic files, not text files, as well as pgs files?

I have done quite a lot of OCR of DVD files in the past with SubRip. It's quite labour intensive and sometimes, depending on original font it's unrecognizable. If this is the case I think I will wait until the srt file is available on some subtitle site.

Let's hope this was an isolated case and there are no more pgs files for demux.

If I've used SubtitleCreator to open SUP files once I've done it a couple of hundred times. Maybe update your SC. I'm using v.2.3RC1. I work with SUPs from DVDs. If yours is from a Blu-Ray, I know nothing about them. As for DVDSubEdit, don't you have the IFO? Open the SUP followed by the IFO file. Again, if from a Blu-Ray, I have no idea.

Yes, version 2.3 opens sup files. Problem was the mirror site they offer has older version.

But my problem remains unsolved. Did all you said, exported as vobsub and OCRed with Subrip. A disaster!

Subrip asks two or three times for each character. Awful!

As I said, I better wait for the sub to come out, what will happen soon enough.

    Thanks!

  9. Yes, SubRip can be problematic sometimes when the subtitle letters aren't exactly identical. You can adjust it to become less sensitive in Options->Advanced OCR Setup. Or you can perform the OCR in SubResynch included as part of the VobSub package. It often works well when I'm having trouble with SubRip.

It's not guaranteed to work every time. All I can tell you is exporting PGS at 720x480 from BDSup2Sub I get over 90% edit free .srt conversion when I load them into DVDSubEdit. I only do English Subs. I have no idea about other languages.

If the output is gibberish then you either have to try to use idx/sub as your subtitle or search .srt download sites for the subs. Sometimes conversion just won't work. Nothing is 100%. But it works for me the vast majority of English PGS subs.

Also have you looked at the subs in BDSup2Sub before exporting? Garbage in, garbage out.

edit: another hint, I have better luck extracting the sub stream from MKV using
    MkvExtractGui-2

Is there any AUTOMATIC way to make any sup file into srt without needing to enter every letter manually?

    Yes there is: Subtitle Edit

Just used it, did it all automagically.

HINT: Just hit "add to user dictionary" when asked any questions
