This thread's getting super technical, but I wanted to add that the 60i footage can be converted to progressive and here's the info on that: http://eugenia.queru.com/2009/02/09/butter-smooth-slow-motion/
-
This doesn't apply to him, it's not interlaced footage, and he shouldn't deinterlace
His "60i" footage is really telecined (3:2 hard pulldown). So it's progressive content in a 60i stream. In order to get the 24p footage back , he has to remove pulldown or "inverse telecine"
@magilla - I think there is a FREE version of cineform now , ever since gopro bought them . Search for "gopro cineform studio" . I think it includes directshow and VFW encoders/decoders. Cineform is very stable in vegas, and editing performance is great -
no
http://gopro.com/3d-cineform-studio-software-download/
I don't think the free version has hdlink or can remove pulldown (not sure) . There is some GUI for it but I never played around with it
I tested it out on one of my "test" computers and it shows up ok in vdub (vfw encoder), so you could use avisynth to IVTC and encode to cineform (you could also convert the MOV files while you are at it) -
You really need the Cineform Neoscene product. Add it to the gift and you have it for future use.
http://www.cineform.com/neoscene/
The other "free" product is intended to work with their 3D camera hardware. Not sure whether it can be unbundled but most likely will lack the inverse telecine feature you need. To find out is a high tech project that doesn't advance your short term need to edit a wedding.
I'm assuming you are doing the wedding gratis as a gift? If not time for better business bureau.Recommends: Kiva.org - Loans that change lives.

Ya edDV,
I'm just a hobiest. It's my 3 wedding shoot for a relative/friend. I don't think I'll buy Neoscene this week. The reception is this Saturday and I need to show footage for people that didn't attend the wedding. It was a destination wedding. So, I can fudge it for a usable copy, then take my time to get the real good version to the couple at a later date. -
A quick edit suggests a 60i project. Vegas will convert Nikon 24p and Pentax 30p to 60i.
I'd show it in 60i HD off a computer or Blu-Ray player AVCHD disc. A media player like the WDTV is another option.
BTW: The advanced 3D product is now called Neo3D and sells for $999.

OK, when I left the project at 23.97p and rendered it to 720x480 29.97i 9.8Mbps MPEG2 the results were horrible. The Nikon footage was choppy and the AVCHD files show very chubby interlaced like distortions. Also, very weird, my crossfades don't work. Instead of blending the footage it flickers frames from one clip to the intersecting clip until the crossfade is over.
I redid my crossfades and made them fade to black between clips. I am rerendering the test using the DVD Architect compatibility settings. We'll see what I get. -
Suggest a 60i project. Make sure project deinterlace method is set to interpolate fields.
To get 23.976p to work you would have to externally inverse telecine your AVCHD files and frame rate convert the Pentax files.Recommends: Kiva.org - Loans that change lives.

"Make sure project deinterlace method is set to interpolate fields." This fixed my interlace problems. My test DVDs look OK.
I think the majority of my problem is lack of RAM. I noticed last night while editing, I added a new MOV clip to my timeline and the video was BLACK. I could hear the sound. The file played fine on an external player but would not play in the Vegas timeline. Thinking it was a display glitch I rendered a sample. It also rendered black. Weird right?
So I closed Vegas. I also have a batch file I made which kills all nonessential services on my machine. I run this before capping. I ran it to free up resources and restarted Vegas. Same MOV clip seems to work fine now in the timeline. -
I've noticed that Vegas always try to give you focus on the timeline first, and does the grunt work in the background. But if you're too active on the timeline while it's trying to sort out a mixed bag, that's when stuff happens.
Sometimes it appears frozen too, but if you give it a little time it comes back.
The problem I've been having lately is when I try to close the program, and it asks if I want to save the project, and I do, it will often crash. So what I do now is save the project first, and it's fine. But if I DON'T want to save the project, like if I'm just doing something unimportant, it NEVER crashes. -
Vegas is definately a "save often" application. But I've been working with multimedia for a long time and I'm used to crashy applications. I wouldn't include Vegas in the "crashy" category though, I think it's my hardware. Vegas is actually pretty stable. Power Director, on the other hand, is just bad software. I Ctrl+S often, it's second nature. My rule is, anything I've been working on for more than 20min is worth saving, just so I don't have to redo.
-
Not sure if Vegas has problems or if you are betting the farm that your render will work on current hardware.
60i timeline has lower risk.Recommends: Kiva.org - Loans that change lives.
