Hi guys,
I currently have a 900mhz Duron CPU. Was wondering, what would be the difference in the time it takes to encode an avi file to vcd if a went up to, say, a 1700mhz Athlon? Is there one Athlon that works better over another when it comes to video editing?
Most of the AVIs I'm converting are around 690-700mb and take from 5-6.5 hours to encode to vcd. I've read that guys on here are doing the same in just over 2 hours.
I'm using TMPEG with Kwags template, center custom video arrange, and block softening turned on. Been using this template whether the fps of the avi is 29.7 or 23.9. OS is Win2000Pro.
Thanks for any opinions.

Hi,
I have a Athlon XP 1700+ @ 1800+ and I take about 1.5 hours to encode a full 2 hour video
speed Athlon XP 1800+ = 2x speed My old Celeron 2 1200MHz 8)
Believe me...AMD RULES!!! -
Intel P3 and P4 have special instruction sets that performs "math" quickly. When encoding video, almost all the CPU does is math. So, my P3 1Ghz encodes VCD at 1:1 or 1:1.2 speeds, that is almost real time encoding (Tmpeg). I'm getting a P4 1.5 Ghz with DDR memory soon, and hope it will perform even faster, perhaps doing SVCD at close to real time??

I am totally lost here. We just put together a dual processor Athlon 1.8 system with 1gig of RAM to do 3D animation and also to work with our DPS Perception Recorder capture card, using an external 10,000 rpm scsi drive for storage and tmpgenc to encode videos for CD distribution. It takes us an hour to render a 10 minute 320x240 mpeg-1 video. What are we doing wrong!!??

I had a Duron 800mhz and it took me 4 to 6 hours to do a DivX to VCD. To do a SVCD/2-pass DVD rip it would take 18 to 24hrs.
Just upgraded to a 1.2ghz Duron and now a DivX to VCD takes 1.5 to 3 hours and a DVD rip to SVCD w/ 2-pass takes from 10 to 13 hours.
So upgrading your cpu does in fact help
