tries to read it but then quits.

    Other files work ok.

I looked at GSpot and noticed it has packed bitstream so removed it with MPEG4 Modifier, still doesn't work.

Thought it might be QPEL and GMC, so followed this guide to re-encode - http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/165637

    Still doesn't work!!!

    Using a LG DVX692H

Not sure about your player in particular, with regards to how closely it wants the file encoded to DivX Home Theater specs. That being said, there are a number of things about the file that stand out to me as being non-spec.

    (1) The file is in OpenDML format ... many standalones won't play this. It needs to be remuxed as a standard AVI file (Version 1)
    (2) The audio is VBR (variable bit rate). This usually needs to be CBR (constant bit rate). If it does play, the audio may go out of sync.
    (3) The file has a max of 2 b-frames. DivX Home Theater specs only allow for 1, but many players will allow 2. My Philips DVP-642 will allow 2, but only if the bitstream is NOT packed ... 2 b-frames AND packed bitstream on mine are a no-go.

The bit rate also seems kinda low to me (only 358 kbps), the image quality mustn't be terribly good ...? (Possibly a corrupt file? Does the file play OK on your PC?) Not sure if players have a hard time time if the bit rate is too low (although some do if it's too high). Just a thought ...

Anyways, maybe compare the GSpot output of this file (as posted) with those of files that do work on your player, with particular attention to the items I pointed out above, and see if there are any differences. If so, this may be the issue. Good luck!

    Thanks for the tips.

How do I remux as standard AVI v1?

I compared to a working file and that is also set to OpenDML.

And yes it plays fine on PC

I've pretty much given up with virtualdubmod. I think I've matched everything in GSpot to a working file and it still doesn't work. I even installed an older version of Xvid (1.1.2) but had no success.

I'm giving AVI Recomp a go. How do I disable the second pass? Also how do I set max BVOP con to 1? I see theres an option to disable BVOP, does that get rid of it altogether?

Tried it, and still doesn't work

Is the resolution a problem? I have a file which is higher and it works. But maybe its not a good setting on this problem file?

The resolution should easily be OK. My guess since really it looks like it SHOULD play, but doesn't is that either the media is bad that it's stored on or the file may have bad frames and your player is barfing as soon as it hits one (could be very early in the video).

Some players will not play video's unless they are dvd allowed resolution.

Do the same thing as in first post via gspot ... but with two files that play ... ... post ... these will help identify the problem.

  9. Try using Mpeg4Modifier to remux with packed bitstream.

What set top player do you have, which you are trying to view the AVI on?

Nevermind, just saw you posted it...

What is your source, and what encoder are you using?

Ive had great success with FFMPEG and even Mencoder building some AVIs that play on every Divx set top player Ive tried it on...

Will follow the thread for your follow up...

You might give AutoGK a try (install it with ESS support enabled). It's always (more or less) worked for creating AVIs for my DivX/Xvid-capable Philips players.

  12. Try changing max consecutive b frames to 1. If that doesn't work try 0.
