Have you ever seen the cameras at big sporting events? Or sometimes used by National Geographic photographers?
For example:

It's probably a REAL, GOOD-quality lens (Great? I don't know without getting the Model# details). Most likely the "blue" part is a hood, but the rest should be the real deal.
I'm quite surprised this dude isn't sporting a monopod. A true, good lens is quite WEIGHTY!!! (And he doesn't quite have Popeye arms).

Don't understand the Q
That is clearly a wide lens* with a face paste job.
No way 500mm which would have that truck pushing his back.

Looks like a few lens hoods + foam shrink wrap.Recommends: Kiva.org - Loans that change lives.

If you shot it with an 18-135 zoom, but at <~45mm, it IS wide angle at that point! Just like it would be "normal" in the 45-65mm range, and Tele in the >70mm range. That's how zooms work.

Ignoring the silly Photochops...
Honestly, anybody that holds a lens that size without support is a dumbass. The weight of that lens will massively stress the mount, resulting in give that screws up the metering, the focusing, and the stability of using it. I have stress points on my mounts, and that's with support. In fact, I hold the lens -- not the camera. I can't even shoot well with one lens anymore, because the lens mount has warped over time. That took about 8 years of heavy use.
Note his camera is a compact POS of some kind -- not a higher end body.
If I had to guess, I'd say the person in the photo is an amateur that rented or borrowed. A regular user/owner would never be that stupid.Want my help? Ask here! (not via PM!)

"Ignoring the silly Photochops..." Ah come on. Hubble telescope for a lens, budwze on the beach wearing a marble bag. That's funny stuff.
On your note, I was also thinking there is no way I'd lift that lens with my camera. I've heafted 400mm lenses, they are not light. -
