Hi, I have some vob files sourced from a dvd with a resolution of 1024x576 if I play these from the DVD that their from they play fine as in fullscreen on my preffered media player mpc outputting to my lcd tv however if i try and play these vobs without using the DVD menu then they do not show fullscreen, correct me if I'm wrong but I believe this is due to the pixels being rectangular and my thinking is mpc is not recognising them as such when played directly, therefore there must be something embedded when playing the DVD that tells mpc to adjust correctly, I would like to be able to play these vobs directly and in fullscreen reason being I have a number of DVDs that I would like to get rid of and have the files individually accessable on my pc without the need to load up a menu, I would like to avoid editing in as far as using codecs and altering bitrates as I am happy with the mpeg2 video and aac audio as it is and would like to avoid the time required to reencode, although I dont mind repackaging them as mkv or mp4. so my question is is it possible to alter the files so that they will play correctly or is there any options in mpc that will make them display properly as in a permanent fashion I dont want to have to adjust settings every time I open a file.
thanks.

Are you sure the source is a proper DVD-Video disc? DVD-Video is limited to a maximum of 720x480 (NTSC) or 720x576 (PAL).
Individual VOB files may not contain all of the information necessary to play a video properly - or contain the entire video. Plus, they may contain other things that players or other software might choke on.
If you don't want to re-encode, try using VOB2MPEG to create a single MPEG from the DVD. There's no re-encoding involved. Then, you can see if MPC plays the resulting video the way you prefer. If cameras add ten pounds, why would people want to eat them? -
PAL DVD is 720x576. Wide flag triggers a square pixel player to stretch 720x576 out to 1024x576.
Since your computer monitor or HDTV is probably higher resolution than 1024x576, you will need to use the full screen expansion in the player.Recommends: Kiva.org - Loans that change lives.

It's unusual, but not unheard of, for the IFOs to instruct the DVD video to play as 16:9 but the VOBs to have been encoded as 4:3. Therefore when playing the DVD it plays as 16:9, but when playing the VOBs you get a distorted 4:3 picture. And as stated, your VOBs aren't 1024x576, but may be resized to that when being played as a DVD.
You could easily confirm (or disprove) my theory by opening a VOB in GSpot or MediaInfo and checking the DAR. if I'm correct (and there's no guarantee of that), you can use DVDPatcher to patch the VOBs to 16:9. No reencoding, no change in the video except that afterwards the VOBs will play in the correct aspect ratio. -
thanks to all of your replys tried vob2mpeg whilst the outputted mpeg still played at 1024x576 and still not full screen thanks for the suggested prog will certainly be using this to extract the vobs as there often in multiple parts and was using a vob joiner now I dont have to as vob2mpeg joins them for me, there was an option only available in the pro version that suggested that it may force the aspect ratio to widescreen, didnt want to pay out incase it didnt work so tried another vob to mpeg converter which ballsed up my ffdshow which was lucky as I found that without using ffdshow these files now play correctly and the resolution in mpc now says 720 x 576 (AR 16:9) reinstalled ffdshow and disabled it when using mpeg video and everything worked fine then went to getting ffdshows settings back to default and it now works with ffdshow so dont know what i had altered to create this behavour but its all working now
