  1. I'm transfering old camcorder films to my pc for editing and then want to burn then to DVD to send out to family. By default I'm offered Windows Movie Maker which has two formats wmv (which has nice small files, but poor quality) or avi (good quality but huge file). I can handle a 10gb avi, but how do I then burn this on to a DVD RW that can be watched on regular DVD players (Region 2 Europe)?

try capturing with winDV if the cam is using firewire. you'll get a 13GB DVavi for every hour of tape. then use something like avstodvd to convert it to dvd.

that's it's job. DVavi is lightly compressed video, and it will encode nicely to dvd even at a much smaller file size.
