I'm pretty sure I already know the answer........
Is there any audio filters like a compressor/limiter for AVISynth or VDUB? Sure would be nice. The standard answer is to extract the audio, filter in "pick your audio software" then remux. All I want to do is a simple compress/limit, like Vegas provides.

If you import your audio with NicAudio you can apply Dynamic Range Compression -
eg NicAC3Source("FileName.ac3", DRC=1) -
ffdshowsource not good enough? For Audio it should be ok i say, plenty of filters to play with

I did check out and install SOX. I could never get it to work in AVISynth. It could just be bad syntax on my part.
Does ffdshowsource provide filters for VDUB? I really don't need to do anything fancy. I have footage from VHS with a mono audio track from a crappy camcorder. I just want to compress/limit the audio so voices can be heard clearly, at a maximixed db. There is no music or any real concern about the quality of the sound otherwise.
I have Sound Forge and I understand a great deal about audio processing. However, I am trying to limit the number of steps in my process as I have quite a lot of footage to render. If I can get VDUB or AVISynth to do it, all the better. -
Maybe you just need to raise the volume, eg normalize it? Compression will also raise any background hiss/noise imbetween the speech parts.

I have tried the normalization in AVISynth which works in a pinch. A normalizer is kind of limited to the loudest part of the recording. So if any portion of the track hits 0db, normalize is limited in it's ability to increase the overall volume. A compressor\limiter will squelch very loud sounds and amplify quiet sounds dynamically. Quiet voices come forward over loud voices verses normalize which just raises the overall db.
I don't really mind tape hiss. Besides a good compressor\limiter with a variable attack will keep "between speech" hiss from being too abrupt.
