    hi

there is this .wmv file i have that is working properly. then when i burned it to a dvd-rw using NERO, it wouldn't play anymore. unfortunately i deleted the main copy. so i am left with this corrupted and hoping i could still fix this.

i tried opening it via VLC it wouldn't play and same with wmp.

i tried the Steeper and ASF thing, it said "file repair" and still when i try to open it via wmp it still says "wmp cannot play the file, the player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file."

You copied the file to the DVD as data?
At least you should have run the burn "verify", that will tell you if the device could read back what it wrote.

DO you get i/o errors when you attempt to read the DVD? Have you tried isobuster or something similar?

yes, i did copy it as data along with some pictures. the other video files that came with it (same folder) weren't corrupted or so.

i dont have any idea what is i/o errors, but when i play via VLC there no error messages, just wont play.

the isobuster i will try right now.

also, the file right now is currently in my hard disk. i transferred it from the dvd-r.

    update:

i tried using isobuster --- really have no idea how to use this one. any help?

First of all, have you tried copying the file back from DVD using Windows Explorer?
Copy it back to the desktop. Does it play from there? If the disk was unreadable because of a scratch or other damage,
Windows will tell you that it is unable to read certain blocks, etc. (I/O error)

If you do get a read error during the copy, is the disk scratched or physically damaged in some way?

With Isobuster, there is some free functionality and some that is unlocked when you buy it. Basically it uses it's own
routines to access the data on the drive. Look here for more info.

I'm not sure what your problem is. In your first post you said you "deleted the main copy" after you wrote the file to
a DVD-RW. Then your posts seem to suggest that the file on the dvd was corrupted.

But, if you successfully copied the file back to the desktop (or some other location on the hard drive) you have the file back.
Is there a problem with it?

If I misunderstand the problem, explain a little further

    aight.

    months ago..

first, the file was ok. so i burned it to a dvd (then deleted the original copy from my hard disk)

then unfortunately when i opened the file from the DVD, it wont open anymore (so i assumed it was corrupted)

yet still not giving up on it, i decided to just keep the file anyways coz maybe i can repair it somehow.

    present...

i tried using the programs you mentioned, still no luck.

You have not clarified one crucial point. If the disk is scratched and the DVD reader cannot read it, Windows will tell you
it is receiving read errors during the attempted copy On the other hand, if it copies to the hard drive without any problem
and still doesn't play, it's probably due to some other problem in your system such as the player or available codecs.

Open the file in Mediainfo, put it into view/text mode and put the info in the post.

Unfortunately, the info above is missing some sections to do with the video and audio codecs.
I don't know what else to suggest. If you don't mind sharing it with the forum so we can get a better look at it,
upload it at mediafire.com and put the link in here.

Possibly, but you should really look at the contents with a hex editor and compare to a known good file of a similar type.
You can tell a lot very quickly by doing this. Normally you would see a header followed by random characters until the end.

Download a free hex editor, there are many to choose from on the download sites.
    Here is one: http://www.chmaas.handshake.de/delphi/freeware/xvi32/xvi32.htm

Open the editor and load your file. Scroll down and look at the data. Compare it to a known good file, as I mentioned above.

    update.

i compared it with a good file, right part of the hex editor of the good file seems to have a lot of symbols and etc.

whilst the corrupted file i have seems to have nothing.
