I know it's a couple years after the fact, but if you're still looking, I've uploaded instructions for adding tags manually to files over 2GB.

Read up on ASX metafiles, as it specifically provides for what you are looking for and does so after the fact and for just about any filetype.

ASX files have their place, they can be used with several media types, and they are fairly easy to implement, but they are only useful if the player is designed to actually read them. And they also become useless if the actual media file is moved to a different location. And if the ASX file itself is deleted, then all the tag data is lost.

While it is only for AVI files, the advantage of using abcAVI Tag Editor (or the manual procedure for large files), even though not all players are designed to read those tags either, is that all of the tag data is contained within the AVI file itself, so there's no secondary file to keep track of.
