Is this possible?
It would save me a lot of time whilst I am testing different things out.

in the render settings when you add to render queue, not in the comp . If you you do it in the comp, you have to trim the work area or make a nested comp
1) add to render queue. compositon=> add to render queue
2 ) there will be some hot text besides the module labelled "render settings" , click on that.
3) click on the button "custom" . Enter your start and endpoints
if you need some basic tutorials look at lynda.com , adobe.tv, and videocopilot.net has some free beginner tutorials as well -
Yes, go to Composition > Composition Settings > Start Time Code and set that to 0:00:00 and also set Duration to 0:00:10 and then press "OK". After Pre-render the video and you will get 10 Seconds of the video. I tried it and 2.5GB was used up just for that little 10s.
