go to apple computers website, and purchase the apple brand dvd-r's directly from them. they are compatible with windows OS or any other OS for that matter, and they are about $5 bucks a piece when purchased in a five pack. oh, and they are 2x certified. cheapest i've seen for a good brand 2x certified dvd-r. hope that helps, peace

Does it matter what type of media you use? I understand it affects speed, but does it affect quality if I use the cheaper media ($2)?

Using generics may or may not work for you. Some stand-alone players skip etc. when playing generic DVD Rs. and you are open to inconsistant results. There are many posts of people having problems with generics. Bottom line - you get what your pay for.
