    Hi,

I have some mpeg files that play well in VLC and WMP, but when I play them in KMP or MPC seeking is very slow, and usually makes the video stop. I was thinking that maybe I could do some simple repair/conversion to them so I opened one of them in Avidemux. It immediately asked me to index it, and I then saved it as a test. Suddenly it worked beautifully. But I then remembered that the default in Avidemux is (surprise!) AVI. I then tried to save it as an MPEG, but it complained about incompatible audio formats. I tried to choose different audio formats, but it still didn't work and I just gave up. I then tried to save to mp4 and mkv. The mp4 did not play very well, but the mkv played beautifully.

    1. Does anybody have any suggestions for programs to repair mpeg files with seeking problems?

    2. If I want to convert, I would of course like to do as little as possible to the file. The conversion in Avidemux from mpeg to avi or mkv seemed to work well. Or is there some other format/container that would be better?

    Thanks!

Here is part of the input from MediaInfo

    Format: MPEG-PS
    Format: MPEG Video
    Format_Commercial_IfAny: HDV 1080p
    Format version: Version 2
    Format profile: Main@High 1440
    Bit rate: 7 476 Kbps
    Width: 1 440 pixels
    Height: 1 080 pixels

Videoredo and use the quick stream fix.

Maybe it will work with the free mpg2cut2 also, open and save as a new mpg.

    Hi Baldrick,

Thanks a lot for your reply! mpg2cut2 did not help, but Videoredo and the quick stream fix did the trick. Maybe a bit slower seek than the avi/mkv files, but good enough.

What exactly do you think the problem is? My friend is sending me these files, and it would be good if I could make some suggestions for how she could edit the files differently so that I don't have to do this every time.

    Thanks!
