I need some help on learning about the encoding formats AVI MP4 MKV and so on. Where is a good place to watch video (preferably or read a web site or pdf on encoding in the different video formats profiles of the different formats (what good for which types of movies or videos) and ways to get file size dwn and still keep the stability of the movie.
MPEG-2 HD and WMV HD), AVI (DivX, Xvid, etc.), MP4, WMV, 3GP, 3G2, QuickTime (MOV, QT), SWF, FLV, F4V, DVD, MPEG-1, 2, 4, MPG, MJPEG, H.263, H.264, MKV, MPEG1 DPG, AMV, MTV, GIF, TS, M2TS.
Which is best for what video format cause when downloading movies and clips some people use AVI other use mp4 and some time you'll see a mkv and very rarely you'll get a "MOV" quick time file, but you need the mov decoder to see it. Positives and negative of the different formats.

Watching on a computer is simple.... VLC media player (small and free) is most likely all you will ever need.

quite simply, mkv, avi, mp4, mpg, ts, vob, mov, are all containers, basically the portion that comes after the last dot in the name of a media file is the container type.
mpeg-1/2, h264, divx, xvid, ac3, mp3, and the rest all describe the compression scheme used to compress either the video or audio portion of a media related data stream.
experience is the best teacher, download some of the free apps, such as xmedia record, media coder, freecoder, etc and use a test video file to play around with and perform test encodes.
lots of tutorials on this site and feel free to ask specific questions, the way you posed your question is akin to asking "where can i get a video that shows me how to fix a car", there's just so many different topics that no one video will cover everything. -
Which container(s) and codec(s) you want to use depend on what devices you want to view the video on.
