How can I edit TV recordings in .TSV format?

However from the minimum info you have supplied it looks like a MPEGTS file so you could simply rename the suffix to MPG or TS and programs like
MPEGStreamclip will open it and a be able to do simple edits like top and tailing and editing out commercials and then save to a variety of formats.
If you want to do more complex editing then there's Womble etc.
After renaming to say .TS I would run it through ProjectX in demux mode to give you separate audio, video and subtitles tracks and clean up any transmission errors etc.

I get the message "unsupported file type" if I try to open in MPEGStreamclip and if I choose to continue anyway it stops responding.

OK that logs confirms TS - what do you want to do exactly?

Do you need subtitles? because they are present.
Do you simply want to top and tail and remove commercials if any?

The best program for this type of format and source is the less than friendly looking ProjectX as it will fix quite a few errors in transmission if you select To Demux ie this produces separate video, audio and subtitle tracks ( you need to insert the correct page number for what country you are in for this to work and select srt - in Australia for example it is page 801)

You can do simple edits ie top and tail and commercial removal in ProjectX - this ensures the subtitle track will be in sync so you don't have to fiddle later. The cut in cut out interface is similar to VideRedo but not as pretty!

If you simply want to edit it then select To M2P and then change the suffix to mpg after it has done the job. This selection will make a fairly normal mpeg file that you can edit in any mpeg editor like Womble or VideRedo - for freeware programs do a Google search or the Tools section on this forum. In setting up ProjectX you can refer to my wiki under my signature but you will have to change the subtitle page number to suit local requirements

@netmask56: since then does ProjectX support H.264 videostreams? Last time I checked ProjectX only supported MPEG-2/1 Videostreams,... (reading you post it sounds like ProjectX could be used to edit H.264 videostreams inside a transportstream)

Ah yes you are correct - I didn't notice Format : AVC well that puts a spanner in the works! Alas ProjectX is of no use.
I do hope OoZooN will add H264 and maybe even rudimentary audio monitoring.
As far as I know there isn't a direct ProjectX equivalent for H264 files that will demux all the elements.

I'm just editing TV News files of one hour duration: e.g. taking out random stories of 1/5 mins each...

I know it is an old thread, but I want to share my experience to help others. A few months ago my DTV set top box was broken, so I bought a new one to replace it. The new box records video in .TSV format. After a little research I discovered that VirtualDub 2 can open the video with the ffmpeg plugin, but if you try to cut out commercials the audio gets out of sync. If you just want to play the movie without editing, just to watch it on your computer, Media Player Classic can open it. You can also associate the .TSV files with Media Player Classic so they open automatically with double-click. In order to edit the video without losing audio sync, you can open the file in Handbrake and convert it to as high as possible quality so it is apparently as good as the original. I convert it to MKV with HEVC compression and as high bitrate as 4000K for SD or 10000K for HD. This is virtually lossless. I can then edit the result in VirtualDub or any other program. I tried to edit directly in Handbrake by looking the appropriate start/stop frames in VirtualDub and setting these in Handbrake, but for some reason they were not very accurate, so I prefer to create the virtually lossless MKV file and edit that.

NEW METHOD TO EDIT .TSV VIDEO FILES:

The old method was to open the file in Handbrake and convert to MKV with as good as possible quality (such as HEVC 4000K for 720x576).

I discovered that Avidemux can also open .TSV video files, so I set both video and audio to COPY and save as .MKV. This converts the .TSV file in .MKV without recoding it and affecting quality! I can then open this .MKV file in VirtualDub or any other application and edit accurately and with synced sound directly from the original streams without losing quality!
