  1. Hi Al;ll

I am converting a bunch of music video tapes they are between 1.5 and 2 hrs long ..I recorded them to my HD of my older model DVR.

I went to take them off the HD only to find out DVD-DL are hard to find . I was wondering if this is a dying bread and I want to try to find DVD-RW DL if those even exist

Any suggestions on places to find these disc ...

    I have tried :
    microcenter
    newegg
    tigerdirect

    Thanks
    Ed

DVD-RW DL and DVD+RW DL (just in case you were curious about the latter) don't exist. Both were announced some years ago and one of them (+RW DL?) actually had a very small number of sample discs that were sent to reviewers but they never made it to stores. The best guess is that manufacturing them proved too costly and the discs were going to sell for $10-15 US each. Given how the US marketplace demands low cost above quality for DVD media, you can understand why there was a reluctance to go ahead and make the discs the available at all. Sales would have probably been very bad.

You can buy DVD-R DL discs, but they are expensive because they are hard to manufacture. If you must use these instead of the cheaper DVD+RW DL then our usual warning applies - ONLY buy Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden. Note that Taiyo Yuden does not export DVD-R DL discs to the USA so they are VERY expensive if you can even find them at all. Here are some online sources for Verbatim DVD-R DL discs:

  3. Ok thanks for the info on the DVD-R DL RW

It seems that verbatim DVD-R DL are only sold in 3 packs for $13

I saw Riitek on one of those links ...25 for $23

    Anyone else have any input

    Greetings ...

If you use Dual Layer DVD's to make copies for friends, be advised that some older players (and maybe a select few newer ones) may or may not play the discs properly, even if you burn them the right way. I invested in one 20-disc case of DL-type DVD's (Verbatim, as recommended by many VideoHelp posters) and although I got them to burn A-OK using 2.4x write speed, they would not play right in certain machines.

As a possible alternative to DL-type discs, you may wish to look for software that can condense material down to a regular DVD-R disc, which should be playable on just about anything. I use DVDShrink for the condensing process, then burn to disc at 6x just to be safe. For DVD-R discs, I'd follow the recommendation of VideoHelp posters and get either Verbatim or JVC-Taiyo Yuden.

    Thanx-A-Lot and Best of Luck,
    Frank-0-Video

  6. ok [_chef_] where are you seeing dvd-r dual layer on verbatims site

Frank-0-Video...I am recording these with my dvr then putting on dvd the onto my computer to DJ with...where did you buy your 20 disc case verbatim dvd-r dl

The problem with some of these tapes is the videos are mixed into each other so I can't really split them to 2 single dvd-r .....I just can't get them split well

    Thanks

As far as I can tell, Verbatim ONLY sells the DVD-R DL 3 packs in North America now so I'm not sure if Chef sees something different in Europe.

I haven't ordered from these guys, but someone on the forums I hear who I consider to be reliable recommended this site as a source for Taiyo Yuden DVD-R DL discs.

    Greetings VCD4Me .....

I wanted to use Dual Layer discs on a trial/experimental basis before making a big commitment to that particular type. The 20-pack of Verbatim 2.4x DVD+R DL discs was bought at a local Best Buy - Not the best place value-wise to get certain things, but in my case quick and helpful. After a few burns with mixed and sometime bad results, I've concluded that Dual-Layer is not for me and it's wiser to go with single-layer instead.

    I found several offerings of Dual-Layer DVD's on the (click-on here »» ) Supermedia.com web-site.

    About your "split" comment ---

With regards to DVD Shrink, it does not split anything as far as I know. What it does do is take DVD data (Audio_TS and Video_TS) that has either come from or is intended for one dual-layer disc (or two-or-more single layer discs) and condenses (or maybe I should say compresses) all that data down into one ISO image which can then be burned onto one single-layer DVD-R disc. I have used DVD Shrink with both commercial and home-made DVD's, and have been very pleased with the results.

    Thanx-A-Lot and Good Luck, Frank-0-Video
