avi is not a streamable format. You wouldn't be able to embed on a blog for example. Youtube doesn't matter, because YT will re-encode everything anyway
video => compression and select a format
you may have to install external codec e.g. xvid if you want xvid , or x264 vfw if you want h264 , or some other format
choose settings that are appropriate for your goal. If you don't know, just use the default 1 pass quantizer encoding (e.g. xvid q=4) . Lower quantizer means higher quality, larger filesize.
then file=>save as avi
If your video is interlaced , you may have to deinterlace before any filter or cropping -
Most likely because you are forcing it to make an odd sized video by cropping it. Mask it with something like BorderControl.
Border Control Plugin for VirtualDub

..I just use Black Region. -
I don't edit any of my mpg video. My program can start and stop anywhere in a video. No resolution loss and no wasted time.
I initially added the capability to get rid of the jigglies at the beginning and end of video caused by hitting the start stop button.
the program is at:
http://www.telusplanet.net/public/stonedan/search.exe
two lines of text per video is required:
photo text related to the video ie bulls fighting start==500 wait=20
xxx.c:\search\myvideos\20110611153149.mpg
the program reads the text file looking for matches and will start at .5 of a second in and play for 20 seconds.
I have a special catalog option for golf. That will play the short clip and then the last 3 seconds (the swing) in slow motion. Within 10 minutes of leaving the course the video from 2 camcorders (180 clips) is up and playing on the big screens (random by foursome by hole) no editing at all. Nobody does golf video easier and quicker than this. After the playback is happening. DVD's can be burned.
Timeline playback is the answer. I've been doing it for years.... Boo to the editors

Sorry some systems come with this dll but I have it uploaded at my site
http://www.telusplanet.net/public/stonedan/msvbvm50.dll
Just save it to the same location you have the search.exe
There is a lot of info on how to use this app for video. Check for SpectateSwamp you'll find me bragging and bragging. Nobody has better control of their video than me and maybe you. -
My video player can't crop any video but it can skip various parts easily.
What I do to crop video is to do screen reshoots. It pisses the perfect perfects off to no end. Turn off the auto focus option on your camcorder and just zoom in on the section of the screen you want and shoot. Give it a try. It may work for you? -
Changing the timeline for playback has nothing whatsoever to do with your original cropping question.
The subtitle option is the ONLY thing that will avoid re-encoding.
Other than that, VirtualDub and an Encoder. LOTS and LOTS and LOTS of very well done instructions available right here on this site for using those tools. Pictures and everything.
BUT, and REPEAT, changing the timeline a few seconds one way or another has nothing whatsoever to do with your original post. Unless you want to totally eliminate all video that shows the banners. It would have the benefit of not requiring a re-encode. -
Yeah, and so was a demand not to lose any quality (meaning not reencoding):
So, what's it going to be, crop and reencode and lose quality? Or just cover it up with a black subtitle bar and not have to reencode and lose any quality at all?
And, by the way, if you crop from the bottom (as opposed to just covering it with black in one way or another), you'll also lose the aspect ratio unless you also crop from the sides and then resize to keep the same AR. This is for DVD, right?
And you can safely ignore everything SpectateSwamp has written since none of it is the least bit relevant to what you're asking. -

AlanHK first mentioned the idea back on the first page.
How to do it? It depends on how you create your subtitles. I believe SubtitleCreator can create them and you can dictate the size of the background and make it opaque instead of it being transparent, as is usual. So I think it can be done all in one step. Maybe SubtitleWorkshop also. I don't know as I don't use those programs. I do it after the fact using DVDSubEdit. I created a topsub in Substation Alpha, one that lasted throughout the entire video, converted it to SST in MaestroSBT, and then authored using Muxman. I opened the resulting DVD in DVDSubEdit (first picture), turned the colors to black and made the background opaque (2nd picture) and then moved the subs down to near the bottom (3rd picture):
