I use Vegas Pro 10.0, and would like to change the default settings in the transitions (e.g., fade through black) to make them shorter. I can't figure out where to do this. I was thinking that the solution might be to create a new transition with the settings I want, but can't figure out how to do this either.

Also, since I use a limited number of preset transitions and media generators, I would like the display to show only the ones I use, instead of having to scroll through a vast number of options. Does anybody out there know if this is possible?

    Thanks!

The length of a transition is determined by the length of your fade/crossfade. You can set a default time in preferences. Example, I use .5 (half second) and the cursor will snap on that.

To set any transition as a preset, open the "animate" timeline and set the length with keyframes, then save and it will become one of the presets.

Thanks. I tried it, and for some reason, it didn't work. I also tried creating a new preset with the fade/crossfade I want, and now I have a preset with the name I gave it, but with the same default setting the old one had.

Any ideas on why it's not working?

Hmmm....it seems to only save whatever settings you use to start the transition.

There are other ways to do this, but before I go off on that, it may be possible to use automation or scripting, although I never use that, so I can't advise anything.

You might bring this up in the Vegas forum.

Come back here if you want to do it manually, as a prebuilt event that you can composite.

Go to the "Media Generator" tab, choose the solid color black, drag to the timeline, then make it the length you want.

Right-click on the track and insert a composite envelope. Make two points around the black box, and make your fade.

Make a selection of your new fade and render it to "Still Image Sequence", PNG format into a new folder.

Bring it into Vegas pre-animated, by clicking the first file, then "Open Image Sequence" check box on the open dialog.

EDIT: just noticed you wanted "fade THROUGH black", not fade to. So just add another fade to the right side of the black box.
