  1. Hi. A month ago I downloaded mkvtoolnix 4.7.0 and it worked a treat. Until today. I noticed a new version, 4.8.0, so tried that but the problem is identical. It's the same with both the installed and portable version.

    First, I get this message:

    “Incompatible mkvmerge version.
The GUI is configured to use the mkvmerge executable from a different version () than the GUI itself (mkvmerge GUI v4.8.0 built on May 24 2011). This is not supported but will not be prevented either. You should change the mkv executable in the preferences dialogue.”

The '… not be prevented' comment sounding promising but no. Trying to load a file generates a “File identification failed” message.

Back to the initial message where it says 'You should change the mkv executable in the preferences dialogue'. I can't see a 'preferences' button anywhere so that's a dead end.

Does anyone know what the problem could be here and the cure for it?

The only A/V related thing I've done since mkv last worked is install a codec qmpeg.acm. Wasn't of use to me so I deleted every reference to qmpeg in C drive and registry.

    Many thanks for any suggestions.

Try download the portable version, https://www.videohelp.com/download/mkvtoolnix-unicode-4.8.0.7z , extract it to a folder and run mmg from it.

edit: missed that you already tested.

What's your os? I'm running it in win7 64bit without any problems.

And you find the preference under File->Options and under mkvmerge.

  3. Hi Baldrick. Same as you - W764. As regards preference, what does one do there? It's just a drop down box for files within your own PC...

You select the mkvmerge.exe from the mkvtoolnix folder.

  5. Aye, that's what I thought. It was already there.

Seems I'm stuck with an inexplicable failure...

But you can select it again and it will add the full path.
