  1. I'm trying to rip a Japanese DVD which has both English and Japanese audio.
I want to rip it with only the English audio but I'm having no luck.
I've tried shrink, TMPGE, and DVD FAB nut they haven't worked.
    What do I do?

What do you mean "they haven't worked" ?

You're gonna have to 2-step this unless you pay for Fab. Rip the entire thing with Fab, then use Shrink to "reauthor" the rip. Go in and turn off all the non-English audio tracks in Shrink so you're left with just the one you want. Verify the actual audio track; I just hit a DVD that had them all labeled wrong and found myself listening to Spanish by accident

  3. Ok,
I ripped with DVD fab. However, when I open shrink, I don't see any specific language options.
What I do see is two Audio check boxes under the compression settings, both lables AC3 2- ch Unspecified. I tried unchecking these and then previewing the footage, however it's still in Japanese.
I don't know if this helps, but both languages are playing at the same time. (The DVD does have the option of changing the language though.)

I suspect that this may be a variation on the old "Russian voiceover" question that shows up here from time to time.

GeorgeD123 - Here's what you need to do. Play the DVD and tell us if you hear Japanese only in one channel and English only in the other channel or if you hear both languages at the same time sort of in the center.

What exactly does this "change the language" option on the DVD do? More specific details on WHAT you hear when doing this please.

  5. Alright,
I listened to my speakers and both Japanese and English play simultaneously in both channels.
As far as the "change the language option" on the dvd is concerned, I haven't really seen one, at least one I can read as its all in Japanese.
However, I can use the audio button on my DVD player, which will turn either language off.

That's a little hard to believe if you're playing the DVD properly. Let me guess - you just double-clicked on a VOB on the hard drive and both languages started playing. So, as well as not playing the DVD properly, you don't have a proper splitter either. Or you're using the lousy Windows Media Player.

Even if you're doing it with Shrink, you'll be left with a menuless DVD. There are ways to get the menus back, but me, I'd do it differently. First, demux (PGCDemux). Make sure you get 2 audio files and one's in English and the other's Japanese. Reauthor with the language you want, the video, the chapters (Cellfile.txt) and subs if wanted (Muxman). Stick the reauthored DVD back into the original one, getting back the menus and extras (the 'Replace' button of VobBlanker).

If you ask me, removing the Japanese language of a Japanese language DVD in order to keep only a crappy English dub track is plain stupid. That's what subtitles are for. You can read, can't you? Any reason you're doing this at all? Why can't you keep both languages?

  7. First of all, the footage is of an American sporting event that was shot in English to begin with. The Japanese film company put the Japanese cometary over the footage. In addition, although I can read just fine, there are no subtitles, as stupid as that may sound to you. Not that I need them in this instance anyway.
Next, I've never been told that there was an improper way of playing a DVD. If you know a better way, do tell.
Thank you for the tip, I will try it. However, you don't have to provide it in such a condescending manner. I came to this forum for help, not to be berated. Whenever I've asked for help here before I received nothing but friendly replies and advice, until now.

In dvd shrink in the preview window in the bottom left hand corner, you can right click and choose which audio track to hear and see what each one sounds like.

I have seen some import dvd's and i know for sure at least one bluray that have the language of the foreign country talking at the same time over the original english audio.... annoying as hell!!!!!!!!

But the same bluray also had an English only audio track.

  9. If it's as Noahtuck described, then I apologize. Me, I've never heard of such a thing and I've dissected several thousand DVDs but, admittedly, not DVDs of sporting events. And yes, there is a proper way to play a DVD. Did you just double-click on the VOB and get both languages at the same time? You said you can switch languages when playing the DVD in the standalone. That tells me you weren't playing it correctly when you got both languages. One way to tell for sure is to demux as I described and then play the 2 audio tracks.

I am just throwing out another possibility as i have seen such things but none of us can know for sure without having the files sitting in front of us or without a sample, etc.
