FYI.....I've been experimenting converting DVD material (complete movies) to an iPod Touch 4th Generation. After trying WinFF, MainConcept Reference and Handbrake .....the clear winner seems to be HandBrake. WinFF is a close second and works best with standard "Fullscreen" material like material captured to MPEG2 via a capture card and authored to a DVD.
But when dealing with multi-channel audio (down-converting to 2 channel), Hollywood DVD movie material...Handbreak is the winner. MainConcept completely buggered up the multi-channel audio 3x in a row although it gave great file size vs. video quality.
The file sizes are a bit larger using the standard preset settings (which I used in ALL 3 programs) in Handbreak...but the quality is excellent and the output is consistent time and again.
I ripped most of my stuff from my backup copies of my Hollywood DVDs....making sure to leave only one audio....stripping it down to bare minimum BEFORE converting.
For simple video "clips" like MTV-style music videos....WinFF is the easiest IMO...as long as the clips are full screen with simple 2.0 audio.
There you go...my simple(ton) advisory-type contribution to Videohelp.
