  1. I use VLC player to play my DVDs and all video files.

I like the option to go Frame By Frame but it only go ahead but nut back Frame By Frame.
Does anyone know if it can do this and how?

And I also want to know if anyone knows of maybe a Better free media player out there?

I need it to play DVDs and all video files.
And I need it to have the option Fram By Fram playback ahead and back.

I thought maybe this Forum may know of any?

  2. MPCHC has the ability to go forward and backward frame-by-frame (and larger increments). You'll have to configure keyboard commands to do it though.

  4. MPCHC is a lot like VLC -- it has most codecs built in so you don't need to install system codecs to play most videos. It does have some problems with DV AVI though -- it doesn't seem to seek well when single stepping. An editor like VirtualDub is a much better choice for that type of operation.

I use MPCHC and like it a lot. However, recent experiences on one particular computer have me wondering if its not working right (and VLC or other players not working right also) could be symptomatic of not having your video drivers just right ? Have you ever seen playback where the image, titles, etc. show up upside down and reversed, sort of like looking at Russian text in a mirror ?
One or two other players are doing sound but no video.

I've seen vertically flipped. I think that's a driver problem. Update to the latest WHQL certified drivers for your graphics card. Also try the different options under View -> Options -> Playback -> Output -> DirectShow Video. Especially the ones with two stars.

Thanx for the suggestions. I wasn't too sure about this, because documents, spreadsheets, web pages etc. all still seemed to be displaying normally.

Video has its own subsystem -- separate from the Desktop functions.

  12. Either the player or the display driver can deinterlace when necessary.

No, I meant Mahatma Gandhi's media player and display driver.

Right click on the window while the video is playing and select Filters -> Video Renderer (the name will vary depending on which renderer you are using). There's usually a deinterlace setting there.

The correct extension for playlists in MPCHC is .mpcpl, not .mpcl.

Check what MPEG 2 decoder is in use (Play -> Filters -> whatever video decoder) and see if there is a vertical flip option.
