    Three days ago, I'd tried to convert VOB to MKV with FormatFactory 2.60, and in order to reduce the size, I omnly changed the following setting ... the other remains default.

    === Video Encode: AVC (H264)
    === Bitrate: I used only a half original bitrate. If original 5000kbps< , I used 2500<n
    === Encode2pass: YES

    But the result is ... the picture sharpness, was drastically decrease.
    Is there something wrong with my setting?
    Please informed.
    Thanx.
    Currently I used Vista SP2

    It looks okey. But you could try another tool and see how it works. Like Handbrake, VidCoder, Freemake Converter.

    I'd give it HandBrake and H264 encoder a try, but the picture's sharpness still drastically decreased.
    And this time ... the decreased is more severe than FactoryFormat I used.
    Why?

    I don't set anything except to:
    * Point the target to be 500MB
    * Confirmed that the sound format to AC3 5.1
    * Activated encode2pass

    Is there something wrong with my setting?
    Please show me the right setting is.
    Thank you.

    H.264 at 720x480 and 23.976 fps would likely need a bitrate around 970 kbps.
    970 kbps for video and 448 kps for 5.1 AC3 audio, and the restriction of 500 MB would allow for just 49 minutes of runtime.
    If your movie is longer, then 500 MB just isn't enough.

    Would you mind for showing me how to calculate that, please?

    I used a bitrate calculator inside one of the encoder apps that I frequently use. I don't now about the exact calculation. It is numbers that the app provides, as implemented by its developer.

    Then the encoder should have plenty bytes to use on excellent quality. I'm not sure why your encode provides the results you mention in your original post.

    To be honest, if the video is to be encoded at a low bitrate, it's more likely to exhibit some noticeable artifacts (banding, blocking, etc.), i.e., the image degrades horribly. Try highering the bitrate or encoding at crf>=18.
    Do note that x264 is not so magical that it can downsize a video to half of its original bitrate without losing the image quality.

    Once I just reduce the original (5000+) bitrate in a half (2400) ... but the result is all the same.
    And I'd tried to convert it into AVI ... all is the same.
    Why?

    My VOB file, "Magic Flute", which I downloaded from TPB is 720*480 ... the VIDEO_TS folder contains more than 8GB.
    At least ... how big the file will produced, when I convert it to MKV ?
    In order to obtained maximum quality ... at least, how much bit-rate that I should used?

    Yesterday I resize the Video to (600+)x(400+) and targeted 1900MB.
    And the result is ... OK
    But now I wish there's no resize. Please help me ...

    Sorry I used (+) ... cos I forgot the exact number.

    I've tried to used constant quality ... and stated H264 as codec.
    Everything remains default/un-change ... but the result is ... picture sharpness decrease drastically.
    Why? Is the setting that I used is not proper?
