    I know when using Nero you don't have to convert the avi to an mpg because apparently it automatically does it is that true? and if so does the demo of nero do the same thing?

    Don't do that... the few times I have tried (4-5 times) the quality came out as crap. You should go with TMPGenc instead. The Demo is a full version but only for 30 days from what I understand.
