    I second imgburn.

Also you say you tried different dvds. There is an outside chance if you are trying different discs from the same batch the whole batch could be defective. You should try a different brand altogether from the ones you are having trouble with.

This site recommends taiyo yuden or verbatim dvds.

First, if you have tried Imgburn, and had problems, there's probably logs for those attempts. Post a copy of at least one of them here.

Also, place one of the blank discs you're trying to use in the burner; Imgburn should be able to detect the media code of that disc. Tell us what that media code is.
(Unfortunately, I'm not at a system with Imgburn installed at the moment, so I can't be more specific until perhaps later. )

Theres also a chance the drive has failed. I'm not sure how to test that. But replacement dvd burners are now 30.00 usd or less.

Maybe take your drive out and clean it before you give up on it completely. Maybe in the meantime, order a new drive at newegg or tigerdirect. I got my last one for about $23.00 from newegg.

I had a drive with the same problem. It never did recover. Went with Newegg.com. and bought another. As for cleaning, I took it out and took it apart. Wiped it with a Q-Tip and alcohol (Rubbing). I think denatured would be better, but who doesn't have rubbing alcohol on hand? Anyway, I've cleaned other drives this way and had no problems. As for "Standard" I assume you mean interface? You should go with the type already in place. I bought a SATA drive for mine. You can check it by opening your tower and checking what kind of cable is plugged-in in the back. SATA cable is usually, if not always, RED. If you do decide on taking it apart to clean it, you can always check Youtube for tips on opening your drive. Pretty easy, really.

That's a bad sign. One laser will die before the other one usually.

As to interface, as mentioned above. PATA (or IDE) has the wide ribbon-like cable, SATA cable is more compact.
