    I have been using Sony Vegas Movie Studio 9, and am looking to add subtitles to a short video I have.

    The only way in Vegas to do it is to create on the track above the video for each scene.

    I know programs like Premier and Final Cut do this, but is there any free program out there that will text a subtitle "text" file and import it and fit it to the video.
    I've never created a subtitle file before, but I guess its a straight text file with In-Time, Out-Time, Text entries?

    Thanks,

    Take a look at the 'Tools' at the left of where you are reading this.

    Not used any myself but from these forums Subtitle Workshop comes highly recommended.

    The Vegas method will burn the subtitles in as a permanent part of the video. You may not want that.

    .srt subtitles look something like this:

    1
    00:00:20,000 --> 00:00:24,400
    Altocumulus clouds occur between six thousand

    2
    00:00:24,600 --> 00:00:27,800
    and twenty thousand feet above ground level.
    They are added to the same folder as the video and have the same title as the video. You can easily create or edit them in Notepad. You get the timing from the video.

    EDIT: Since you are asking about subs, I'll move you to our Subtitle Forum. The 'stickies' at the top of the forum should have some useful info.
