I am converting various video files to mpeg4 (see attachment) to play on my car 2din wince 5 dvd player.

It is my goal to achieve best possible audio aac possible.

The video side of things is perfect but i would like to achieve the best possible audio quality.

When I convert a sourse file which has audio aac 384kbps and i set the output to aac 320kbps for example, why do I only get aac 152 kbps or less? If I chose to output to avi with mp3 there is no problem, i get max kbps but i need mp4 aac....aaaah

Any help or direction with this would be appreciated.
    Thanks
    Rob.

I'm moving you to a separate thread.

Try something else/better than xilisoft crapware. Like freemake video converter or handbrake.

Ill try but i did test 7 convertors with the same output profile before settling on Xillisoft. This was the only one which produced a file that my unit recognised so that forced my hand some what.
Is this due to codecs used by different softwares ?

    Thanks for your help.

I see. Nope, I have no idea how to fix it with xilisoft.

MediaInfo says the bitrate is variable, so when you use VBR you cannot specify a fixed bitrate.

The "best possible audio" in your case would NOT be a high bitrate because the car player might choke on it, same for video.

Mpeg4 is not compatible with DVD, so you must be playing them as files, right?

Yes that is right, as well as DVDs it also plays video mp4 files with aac audio and also plays plain old mp3 audio only files.

It handles high bit rate mp3s perfectly and plays mp4 video at 1500kbs so I don’t think there’s any problem with the player choking out.
The problem lies in the production of an mp4 file with the high aac kbps.

When I convert, the settings are for CBR but this is only applicable to the video encoder section, there is no choice to set the audio encoder mode to CBR so I just selected 1pass.
I would have thought that 2pass was necessary for VBR to be achieved?

Maybe you could correct me on that one.

    Thanks for your comments.

I'm not too familiar with AAC audio, but I know that WMA has a much lower bitrate compared to MP3 for the same quality, and I think it only comes in VBR, but I may be wrong.

So you don't need to match the bitrate of MP3 with these more advanced codecs.

You might want to try Handbrake, I think it can do MP4/AAC in an AVI, although that combination is rather odd.
