    Hi everyone, I have a MPEG2 from our Sony DVD camcorder. The camera writes a datecode subtitle stream, but I need to edit a segment of the video. I know this will be a re-encode but that can't be helped. My problem is that I'm trying to preserve the subtitle stream. I've using Sony Vegas Movie Studio 9 to do the edit, but it strips out the subtitle stream. I'm trying to extract the subtitle stream and reapply it after the edit, but I'm having trouble finding the right tools for the task. Can anyone make any suggestions? I see that i can use SubRip to generate a SRT file, but I'd like to preserve the same look of the original subtitles if possible. I tried extracting to SUP and BMP, but I'm unsure what to do with the 99 or so files...

    You could try cut with mpg2cut2 and see if it keeps the subs. Or else try videoredo or mpeg-vcr.

    Thanks Baldrick for the input. Also the new versions of Womble preserve these correctly, but I need to do more than just make cuts, so I'll definitely need to re-encode the video portion. I just want to rip out the subs and put them back as is after the edit. Any ideas?

    Thanks

  5. SubRip can save them in a number of graphical formats also. I don't know in what format you want them when you're all done. But it can save them to SON and also to SST files. SON can be converted to VobSubs (IDX/SUB format) using Son2VSub. Those can be converted to SUP in SubtitleCreator. All are graphical formats identical (except for possibly the colors, which can easily be changed) to the subs in the original MPEG.

    Thanks Baldrick for the suggestions.

    Thanks also manono, I've gotten a lot further thanks to your suggestions. Still playing around with the colors, but that did help me greatly.

    Flow(so far)

    SubRip -> SON/BMP Files -> Son2VSub -> IDX/SUB -> Sub2Sup -> SUP File -> MuxMan
