usb drives and cheap seldom go hand in hand from my understanding.
Do you have a slim cd/dvd drive on the laptop? If so I think they make slim bluray drives now. You could search for that and simply replace your internal unit.
If you have a usb 5 1/4 external housing unit you might consider getting a more inexpensive desktop 5 1/4 bluray drive. Than you can use the usb enclosure and hook it up that way. You might also look into pricing an inexpensive desktop bluray drive and a usb enclosure together and see if that is cheaper than a self contained usb bluray drive.
Its something to consider at least.Donatello - The Shredder? Michelangelo - Maybe all that hardware is for making coleslaw? -
I just picked on up a bluray burner on newegg for $99 with free shipping + 5 free blank bluray discs.

Are the specs of your laptop accurate in your profile? If so don't waste your time. You don't have the drive space to rip a Blu-Ray. Blu-Ray's are anywhere from 25-50GB's and your computer has only 45GB.
Also that processor would choke on any converting of Blu-Ray's to another format.
If those specs are not up to date then as mentioned above your best cheapest alternative is to buy a 3.5" desktop Blu-Ray reader which can be had for around $60-$80 and put it in a 5.25" USB enclosure that has a SATA internal connector. -
sorry the specs aren't correct, ive had 3 comps since then lol. i'll change them.. ok i'll check into the slim and the usb enclosure since so many of you mentioned that. thanks, i'll check out that newegg.com thing also thanks guys

So does anyone have model numbers of a good USB drive, hopefully one which you already own and can verify as being a good performer?

What is your current laptop model? By any chance does it have an e-SATA port? I expect USB throughput to be a limiting factor that would cause most of us to not use a USB Blu-Ray drive. You might not get many answers from users here actually using a USB Blu-Ray drive.
They that give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty or safety.

I've got a Plextor external USB BluRay drive, works just fine for me. The thing I liked about it was that it didn't need an external power source, runs off 1 USB cable. I've got it hooked up to my Zbox. Its only 4X, takes about an hour and a bit to rip an entire disc to HDD using DVDFab. Comes with PowerDVD9 which I think plays 3D BluRays, never tried though. This is the only BluRay drive I've ever owned so really cant compare to anything else. Its like 90 bucks on Newegg right now, I remember getting it on sale for less than that though.
