Hi, PROs
I had M$ OfficeXP > upgraded to Office Ultimate 2007 version 12.0.6215.1000. Both versions were lister in Add-remove Programs in Control Panel.
I have uninstalled OfficeXP, but can't uninstall Office 2007 from Add-rep\move Programs. There's no message, just nothing happens.
If I double-click on a Word document, then Windows Installer opens, saying "Preparing to install...", stays for about a minute, and goes away. That's all.
I can't now install Office 2010. It says: "Error 1714. Can't uninstall the previous version."
Trying to manually delete the C:\Program Files/Microsoft Office is unsucessful, some files in the "Office 12" folder can't be deleted.
I have no knowledge for manipulating the Registry.
What do I do?
Thanks and regards.

Reading your post, it looks like the uninstaller has failed and pointed the uninstaller to what it 'thought' you wanted to uninstall, which uninstalled OfficeXP leaving behind traces of Office 2007 which means you cannot upgrade or install a newer version of Office. Classic uninstaller issues with multiple installs of similiar software
This page explains pretty much what you are having issues with, and Microsoft helpfully have supplied very small software packages that force Office to uninstall and clear all traces of that release of Office from your system
Read the section that says Fix It For Me

You might be better getting all the uninstaller packages and running them one after the other, that way you system should be clear of all traces of any release of Office and you can then restart your system and try again
These are the direct links to each very small piece of software (less than 1MB each) that will clear each version of Office in turn. Just click on each link the link, and run them one at a time. They do work as I installed Office 2007 and ran the uninstaller and it removed all traces of Office 2007 in a few minutes

Have a look at Revo Uninstaller it does a better job of uninstalling software and removes most if not all dead files and registry items left over from uninstallers that don't do what they are supposed to do and uninstall their software completely ... which is most of them

CCleaner is good at what it does, but doesn't remove failed uninstallers that are refusing to uninstall software due to a corrupt uninstall file, you then either have do do it by hand via the registry or by using software supplied by the companies in question who unofficially admit there are issues with their uninstallers falling over and refusing to let you re-install or upgrade their software, as you have found outLast edited by steptoe; 15th May 2011 at 01:35.

Thanks, lowellriggsiam
Thanks, steptoe. You were uncannily accurate in understanding my problem.
Let me try Revo Uninstaller Pro 2.5.3 first. I shall report back.
Regards.

The Revo Uninstaller Pro 2.5.3 is a terrific program, and has delivered. I am now a happy user of Office 2010. However, when it threw up a large number of registry lines and asked whether I want them deleted or not, it was quite scary, but I trusted the program, and it helped.
You all have my regards.Last edited by ukb007; 15th May 2011 at 15:49. Reason: New Info
