DVD authoring - need help

Hello, as a completely new user to this site and to the world of making movies, I now have a DVD which I want to have a menu section that people can select the clips they want to view. Before I burn it, unless I do this, it will only play the whole video which I don't want. I have never ever used a camcorder before, finally I did this and did it ok. I have never edited footage before, or used Movie Maker, again did this (shown how to do it) and really liked it/got into it.
The DVD I am putting together needs to have a master which will then be copied. It advertises courses at college and shows footage of learners doing stuff, but for example, most people want to watch selected bits. There is someone I know who has offered to do this for me, but having got this far, would really appreciate advice asap on how I can do this for myself, for my own self confidence, which would be wonderful. Please tell me what I need to do next in terms of DVD authoring programmes, at the moment I write this from a MAC but will be using a laptop/PC. If you need to know specifics of anything, let me know, I think the version of Movie Maker is quite old 2.1...
