Hello and Good day to all, I am new to the site and I was reading a few posts. The main question I have is I need to run multiple cameras in to a Macbook Pro. I need to know the most efficent way possible to do this. Do you recomend a software switch opposed to a hardware switch? What cameras would be the best for this job and is there a way to do this wirelessly? This is a major opperation and cost is not an issue. I would like to have links and prices please.
Thanks for your time,

Moving you as this is not Media(as in dvdr, cdr media).
I don't think this is the right site for this kind of questions. Maybe try http://www.videomaker.com/community/forums/ -
The classic solution is to conventionally analog switch then convert switcher output to DV.
The classic digital broadcast solution uses SDI (serial digital interface) from cameras to digital switcher. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serial_digital_interface
Until recently, the only consumer digital formats that worked for live streaming were DV/HDV. DV/HDV cameras export a live stream over Firewire (IEEE-1394) that can be live switched and uplinked. Mac software includes Telestream Livecast and BoinxTV. A Macbook Pro has only one Firewire port or no Firewire port. A Mac Pro tower would be more appropriate.

This NAB, several products were announced that accept HDMI live outputs from consumer/prosumer HD cameras. Blackmagic design announced several interesting products for field switching.
ATEM TV Studio - An MAC/WIN controlled HDMI/SDI switcher plus hardware h.264 encoder to USB3 out

ATEM Production Switchers - HDMI/SDI production switchers with hardware control panels

The main issue with multi-camera live field work is cable length. Analog or SDI cables can go hundreds of feet but Firewire/HDMI are constrained to 15-30 feet unless repeaters are used. Blackmagic introduced an HDMI/SDI extender for up to 28 miles!

A more professional solution is to go with SDI cameras. Sony has the $8300 XDCAM-EX PMW-EX3 and Panasonic introduced the $3795 P2 AGHPX170PJ.

Sony also introduced a Pro AVCHD camcorder with SDI for $4950.
