    Greetings ...

I've noticed that there are AC adapters where you can plug in an appropriate USB cable to charge a phone or run a USB-powered device.

Am I correct in assuming that such adapters would work with any USB device, such as an external DVD-CD read-write drive, where two USB connections (one for data, one for power) are required??

USB can only supply 5V of power. You can run a *slim* CD/DVD/Blu-ray drive or a 2.5" hard drive off USB bus power, but not full size optical drives or 3.5" hard drives which require 12V of power.

In this particular case you should be able to plug one connection into your computer and the other into a USB power converter (like the ones for recharging Kindles and iPods). This can be useful to free up a usb port for another device.
