  1. I want to edit out some scenes from a movie file. I would normally use Virtualdub to do this but it cant open the .mp4 file.
In virtualdub what i do is, i open the file, go to video, select 'direct stream copy', go to audio, select 'direct stream copy'. then i select the part i want to edit out and crop it and save the video. How can i do this with avidemux? i dont want to change any codec of the movie just edit out a few scenes. plz explain in detail, im not familiar with this program at all

Open the video under File-->Open. Let AviDemux index the video if it requires it. Move the cursor on the time line where you need it and set the A and B markers at the beginning and ends of your cuts. Click Edit-->Cut to do the actual cuts.

Leave Audio and Video on Copy, set Format to MP4. When you are ready to save the file, click on File-->Save, which brings up a pop up window. Set the place on the hard drive where you want the newly edited video and make a name for your video with an .mp4 extension. Click Save.

Virtualdub will open mp4 files if you have the right plugins and codecs but you have to re-encode. Virtualdub now has an external encoder to create mp4 and mkv but Avidemux will edit the files without having to re-encode.

To open mp4 in Virtualdub, you need...

Quicktime input plugin, installed correctly (do not install the mp4 input plugin)
    Quicktime Alternative

    or

    Directshow input driver
ffdshow set to open H264 under VFW settings
    fcchandler's aacacm

fcchandler is working on an mp4 input plugin but I don't know when he'll release it. He has an FLV input plugin and an MKV plugin.
