    Here's what I have:
Spare laptop, no OS (xp available)
    2.13ghz Pentium M (2mb, 533FSB), 2gb RAM, 80gb 7200rpm HDD, 256mb Nvidia card

Monitor is burning out.... So setting it up so it requires as little ongoing maintenance or oversight is necessary. I can connect to a shared monitor via KVM...

I want to set it up to serve my video (mpeg-2) and mp3 files to my Samsung BD-c5500 and XBox360. I know the xBox360 would need transposing of mpeg-2 files so being limited to the BD-C5500 would suffice....
I'd really like to acquire and load all files on a dlna compliant NAS but the funds aren't available. Simplier, LOW maintenance, low power consumption.

All media is stored on several 1 - 2tb 7200rpm USB drives. All NTFS to support large 4gb+ file sizes

The laptop is wiped clean. No OS.. But I do have XP for it if necessary.

How would you set this machine up? I'd prefer little to no server process (i.e. TVersity) if possible. As lightweight and low maintenance a setup as possible.

Can FreeNAS work? Mount drives accessible to upnp / dlna devices?
Servio (or other) in UBuntu or other linux port?
**I've used TVersity on another XP box but am not sold on it. Same for sharing via Media Player, Media Center. ***

I don't know linux but have 20 years professional experience with Windows and networking... So Linux should be an easy transition.

If you had this machine, how would you set it up to open up access to my media to DLNA compliant devices on network?

linux running Serviio would be my choice if i didn't have a dlna nas box. i like mint linux and you'd find it easy to install and figure out.
