The version contains that bug ... if an updated version isnt available then revert back to an earlier version ... the developer is aware of the bug.

What classfour said; it surprises me that folks constantly have probs with their burning programs and spend hours trying to figger out the bugs, and curse the bloatware that comes with many "payfer" proggies; and (free) Imgburn has long reached the top of the pile for dependability, quality of burn and a small resource footprint.

Looking at the log above, seems that it went wrong during the authoring stage, so this may not be a
    burning issue at all.

  6. This probably isn't a burning error, it looks more like one of the several annoying authoring bugs that infest DVDflick (its a really nifty app, I use it every day, but its a real PITA sometimes). Most downloads of DVDflick include or suggest IMGburn as the burning module, DVDflick itself has no burning capability but hands off the authored disc to IMGburn when the project is finished. Unfortunately DVDflick unpredictably chokes on several types of video file, and there's often no way to tell in advance because it won't show signs of distress until it gets 99% finished with authoring the entire DVD. Occasionally you will notice the program stalls interminably about 60% thru encoding a particular video file, a sure sign its messed up and that file is the cause, but usually DVDflick dies at the very end when its just about to finish creating the menu system for the DVD. Really annoying, because you may have spent 20 mins setting up the layout and waited 2-3 hours for the project to finish, only to have to do it all over again after tediously determining which video file triggered the fault.

These are some common issues I've seen with DVDflick when it drops a log error like the one posted here:

It doesn't especially care for many MP4 and MOV files, it will work with them but about 4 out of 10 cause a problem.

Some types of poorly-created WMV files make it go totally haywire.

It doesn't reliably do PAL>NTSC or NTSC>PAL conversions from file list to DVD if the two formats are mixed on the same DVD project. I've found this to be the most common issue: a mixture of say five files, of various types (WMV, AVI, FLV), with 3 in NTSC and 2 in PAL will result in a choke at the very end of the authoring process. DVDflick has a very hard time getting the audio to sync properly upon PAL>NTSC conversion: it will usually finish the project and let you burn a DVD that has lipsync issues but is at least playable. But about 30% of the time, it just can't manage the audio portion and dies when it gets to the last seconds of finishing the project. At this point, I troubleshoot by checking each file in the layout using the Video Sources tab to see which are PAL and which are NTSC. If I remove the offending PAL files, DVDflick will happily encode the remaining files into a DVD with no issues. If the "problem" PAL files are reorganized and I instruct DVDflick to create a PAL-format DVD from only those files, the project completes successfully. DVDflick generally will convert PAL source files to an NTSC DVD, but sometimes it won't, and its impossible to know beforehand: you just have to let it run and see what happens. It would be nice if there was some sort of "inspection" mode that would let DVDflick analyze the files in a project and tell you which are likely to cause a problem.

So the first thing you'll want to troubleshoot is your "Dark Shadows" source files: find out if they're PAL instead of NTSC. If so, DVDflick probably cannot be used to make an NTSC DVD. (Don't assume just because a movie or TV show was originally made in USA that files found online will be NTSC: a huge percentage of uploaded files are from international PAL versions) If you have a DVD player that autoconverts, you could just have DVDflick make a PAL DVD and play that. But if you must make an NTSC DVD, none of these integrated "easy" programs like DVDflick or AVStoDVD will reliably do the job: you'll need to somehow convert the individual files to NTSC before trying to make a DVD from them. Its also possible that your "Dark Shadows" source MP4s were just badly encoded and off-spec, this happens a lot with downloaded videos, if they're defective they may play fine on your computer but be unacceptable to DVD conversion software.

The weird thing is that I have burned other files like this with no problem. There just seems to be some sort of problem. I don't get it. Maybe I can try the PAL thing.

I tried burning in Image burn and I got a unrecognized file type blah blah. These are mp4s btw - which I guess you already know from the log lol.

This version is the latest. Should I uninstall then install another version? Is there a particular one you recommend.

    Sorry, no, I can't.

I go thru the motions to get certain things done, but when I hit a roadblock like this I usually get out of it with a long but easy workaround because I don't have patience with the "correct" solution. I don't really know why some files will not convert between PAL<>NTSC automatically in DVDflick or AVStoDVD, I just know it happens often enough to be a significant problem. My solution is to tell the programs to make a PAL format DVD instead of NTSC (or vice versa if the NTSC file is a problem). If I really must have the PAL DVD in NTSC format, I simply play the PAL disc in a converting player like Philips and record the output to my NTSC DVD/HDD recorder. Its not the best solution, but I find it easier than trying to convert a PAL file to NTSC using software. Since I don't fully understand why the conversion sometimes fails within DVDflick and AVStoDVD, I'm afraid the DVD project might still fail even if I pre-convert the files and try them again. Rather than waste time converting the files in software, only to see them fail DVD creation anyway, I just make the DVD format preferred by DVDflick or AVStoDVD and do an analog copy conversion from that (or I might play the file directly from PC to DVD/HDD recorder). Most video files I download are television shows, they tend to be either very good quality that survives analog copying nicely or such poor quality that copying can't possibly make them any worse.

To test the authoring process: I usually open the video_ts.ifo file with MPC and play it back.

I do always burn with imgburn - thanks LightningUK!

I used to do PAL > NTSC conversions. Never had a complete failure, but I quickly noticed I got better results
by leaving it as PAL and letting the DVD player do the conversion to NTSC. Testing out the new beta of AVStoDVD,
    looks very nice -
    thanks MrC.

Apologies, MrC, that I did not notice when I replied earlier you are the author of AVStoDVD, and you were looking for specific failure info regarding AVStoDVD: I thought you were another user asking what I did to work around it. Please ignore my previous answer since I'm sure it was unhelpful: regarding AVStoDVD, it "fails" during some DVD projects that involve PAL>NTSC conversion in the same manner as DVDflick. On my Windows XP Pro SP3 system, the progress screen slows to a crawl or stops completely during a "problem" PAL file conversion (hours go by on the AVStoDVD clock but nothing is happening). Or, the application fails at the last moment of creating the DVD files. I have not used AVStoDVD recently so I don't have a relevant error log dump for you, next time it happens I will send it to you. I think it is more a problem with specific video files than either AVStoDVD or DVDflick: many people post poorly-made video files with off-spec parameters. I'm happy when PAL>NTSC conversion works at all in AVStoDVD or DVDflick: its a pleasant surprise, considering the random source files. Since switching your application (or DVDflick) to PAL>PAL nearly always results in a successful DVD, and I can use that DVD to make a hardware NTSC conversion, I usually get what I need.

BTW, I first tried AVStoDVD because DVDflick was giving me this conversion problem and I looked here on VH for recommended alternatives. When AVStoDVD failed with the same files, I realized the problem must be in the files. But I was glad to find AVStoDVD: it has many more options and preserves converted lipsync MUCH better than DVDflick. I like using both programs, for different projects.

I'm glad I'm not the only one having this problem. I've been using this since last year and it was working just fine. I was able to burn up to 13 anime episodes and each one was over 20 minutes long. The quality was great but was not the best so I lowered it down to 7 episodes and it gives me an error now.

I'm gonna try and use version 1.3.0.6.

Let's see if it still has the same problem. I'll let you know when its finished encoding.

Try a small sample project and store vids in c:\vid and output from dvdflick to c:\dvdiso ... before letting dvflick rip set project to retain all files generated and output as iso ... xml should be posted pre error 53 but not seen in log.

Strange bugs can appear when users treat desktop area as a storage area ... it can trigger bugs and access limitations when using certain apps.

  21. DVDflick has some major bugs in its authoring module that were never fixed by its developer. This usually manifests as your "Error 53: File Not Found" - the most useless, uninformative error message of any software I use.

The two most common causes are:

    1. Trying to make a PAL dvd from NTSC source files, and vice-versa, especially if you have a mix of both formats in the source files.

    and/or

    2. One or more of your source files is funky (wrong codec, strange audio, bad container, etc.)

There isn't much you can do to work around the infamous "53: File Not Found" except to keep making slight changes to the layout of your DVD until DVDflick finally manages to complete the project successfully. Try changing the playing order of the videos, change the thumbnails you chose, change the chapter settings, change the DVD target size to a custom number like 4415, choose a different menu design: experiment with anything you can alter in DVDflick edit screens. I usually find my "problem projects" will complete successfully on the second try, but sometimes it takes three or four attempts. You may or may not think its worth the bother: it depends on the speed of your PC and whether you want to try other software. AVStoDVD is the most popular alternative to DVDflick (and its developer is an active member of VideoHelp).

If you are pressed for time and need a DVD immediately, you can quickly bypass the "53: File Not Found" error by choosing the "None" option in the DVD Menu settings. Since most of DVDflicks errors stem from its buggy menu authoring module, telling it to make an auto-play DVD with no menu solves 99% of such errors. A DVD with no menu isn't as nice or convenient, but it will play just fine and you can still navigate titles quickly using the chapter skip buttons on your remote control.

See my earlier post #6 above, as well as this related thread from a few months ago.

An error occured during the encoding process

53 from dvdflcik: File not found

Supposedly, this was fixed with version 1.3.0.2. But it wasn't.

After installation of the software, users can create one volume with a menu; the software will kick back error 53 every time thereafter.

There are exactly two reasonable prescriptions floating about cyberspace for this error:

► Run the program as Administrator. Right-click on the icon, scoot up to Run as administrator, and click on it.

► Close the program. Delete everything inside C:\Users\[your name here]\AppData\Roaming\DVD Flick, and restart the program.

Those are the two solutions I've seen pop up wherein the author actually realizes the error is related to creating a disc with menus. There are a vast multitude of fixes suggested by people clearly without the faintest idea what bug they are facing—some people just like typing stuff, apparently.

Neither of the suggestions above work with the current build of the software (1.3.0.9) on the current build of Windows 7. Error 53 will always prevent multiple volumes with menus from being authored.

The only solution I've found to work without fail is uninstalling and reinstalling the software. Imagine doing that every time you need a disc with menus.

I'm adding to this old thread because this old thread still appears on the first page of a Google search for "error 53" dvd flick.

Re-installation can work, but isn't a universal solution guaranteed to work 100% for everyone.

The overriding fact: DVDflick is buggier than Texas roadkill in August, and has been for a decade. Doing a fresh reinstall may momentarily kill the Error -53 bug, but just as often fails, with the new install returning the same frustrating error upon completion of the same project (especially under Win7 with i3 i5 i7 cpu). The error also occasionally afflicts projects with a single title and NO menu. So I wouldn't recommend going to the re-installation extreme unless you have zero patience and a deadline (even then, it might be easier to just use other software). Depending on DVDflick version, those going the re-install route must also remember to patch the ffmpeg file located in Programs/DVDflick/BIN (some versions of DVDflick slow to a crawl upon fresh install unless you swap to the revised ffmpeg, which may open another can of worms).

After working with DVDflick nearly every day for seven years, on WinXP and Win7, I can confirm massaging the project files (changing file order, changing chapter settings, changing thumbnails, separating PAL from NTSC) will eventually get it past the error. I have had to do this even after a fresh reinstall, whenever that wasn't an instant cure. Unfortunately, massaging the project files might take three or four tries before it works, a tedious PITA which tempts people to the re-install option (or more rationally, alternative software).

One shortcut workaround thats proved 95% successful for me: salvage the finished mpg files from the failed "dvd" folder as soon as the error occurs. Re-do the project from those new uniform source files: this method avoids re-encoding and will successfully rebuild a viable dvd/dvd/VIDEO_TS without the error in approx 10 mins. Gotchas to be aware of: be sure to turn on Edit>Audio>Ignore Audio Delay for each file, and Project>Video>Advanced>Copy MPEG-2 Streams. You must also manually set the desired aspect ratio for each file in both the Edit>Video Sources>Pixel Aspect Ratio and General>Target Aspect Ratio dropdowns. Don't forget to choose a dvd menu design, if you want a menu (the awful "Orange LED" template is least prone to trigger Error -53).

Whether DVDflick is worth this trouble is another question. Most people should probably move to AVStoDVD, which has very active support from the developer here on VH and elsewhere. The only reason I still put up with the burden of DVDflick dysfunction is the time I've already invested learning to make it work for me (workarounds that would be onerous to most users are quick second nature tweaks to me). DVDflick has become too problematic on newer Win7 hardware and I wouldn't dream of using it on Win8: if you aren't running an old legacy PC, choose a more current software package. The AVStoDVD interface is no picnic for newbies, but it beats babysitting DVDflick.

Hey, guess what—I think I figured it out!

  25. Had same problem and tried newest version available, but is would not work either so searched for 1.3.0.9 directly in search engine and installed it. I first deleted the .0.7 version. Unfortunately it ran faster than the 9 version does because the 9 does a double encoding pass I guess to give better resolution , which it does, but it does take a lone time. Be sure to delete the dvd file that it creates in your documents file as that may confuse the burner. I also had more success when I unchecked direct burn and had it create an iso first, then used imgburn to burn the image to disc. Also found out just by searching how to fix the out of sync audio track problem. Once you have selected your files, click on each title and in the tab on right select edit titles, then on left tab select audio click edit audio and in lower left of that screen check ignore audio delay and accept. This fixed the out of sync voice track. I liked the single pass speed of the 07 version, but the video quality is better with the 09 version. Hope this helps
