i do not have hdmi and my provider is directv, SD mode. LSS, i capture to my pvr over component cables at 9Mbps:So, the Hauppage is still recording an analog stream from the HDMI is what you are saying?
directv -> vcr -> toshiba dvd_recorder dr430 -> hdpvr
but, what you may be confusing may have to do with the older HD capture pci i/o cards, including the usb versions, that capture (record or copy) the actual "OTA" HD stream to the hdd, lossless. using another example, you are familiar with the TiVo dvr's ? the older generations were hardware mpeg capture encoder. now, they have models that can capture (record or copy) the actual "CABLE Provider Signal" HD stream (in the same way those pci i/o and usb cards did) but saves it to its build-in hdd. except, that you get it in the form of a dvr, with guides and other fancy features. now, although i'm not totally familiar with the tivo searies, and i may be wrong, that there is the option of (analog, composite/s-video) capturing to its propriatory h264 format, and sends it to the built-in hdd for later viewing. their latest $399 model is their Roamio.

Thanks to everyone for posting great info in this thread, I should be receiving my CVID BG-520 on Wednesday, 11/27/2013. Does anyone know what unpopulated JP1 and JP2 headers are for? Also whats the current draw? I want to make a dual USB A to barrel jack connector and power it from my PS3.

Hey guys,
Thanks for such an informative thread. It's fascinating seeing so much testing and guesswork, and where that's been leading people.
So, I'd like to know if anyone has experience with the PlayStation 4, right now? I believe that the HDMI hardware on that machine is 1.4b, and there are a bunch of Youtubers saying that the Sewell 1x2 boxes no longer work. This is what I have, and it's a model which happily removes HDCP from a PS3.
The PS4's an unknown to me, though, and I'll be getting one at launch in Europe.
So has anyone been able to test with a PS4 or HDMI 1.4 output, using a known working Sewell or one of these ViewHD boxes (which has the same labelled chips as the Sewell)? Are the ViewHD boxes with HDMI 1.4 printed on the circuit board actually compatible with it? Has anyone tried out the more up to date models which market 4k and 1.4 compatibility?
Bound to pounce on something soon, but a little help to my guesswork would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Wasn't the PS4 supposed to get a patch to make it work with capture devices? Hold on for a bit as they have to iron out some bugs with HDMI display from that device. I'm glad I was not an early adopter of either device (though I won an XBone recently it hasn't been delivered yet) as I don't like playing Beta tester...

I was wondering if it is significant that if a box like this one which supports HDMI version 1.4 that it may not strip the HDCP?
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/111034723472?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649
I notice a lot of PS4 users are getting these sort of boxes working with there capture devices, it seems a bit hit and miss which box works?

And another success story... the postman just dropped off my VHD-1X2MN3D which I immediately put to test by connecting up to my SkyHD box and can confirm it works! Now finally I can archive off some content in the planner keeping the HD.
For those interested I'm using it with the Hauppauge HD PVR2 rev B1 chained up to a MacBook Pro booted into Windows 7 x64 and capturing with Arcsoft Showbiz.

I can confirm this works http://r.ebay.com/NgPrmS
SKY HD box > splitter > Avermedia Live Gamer Portable > Laptop captured using AVerMedia RECentral. I can't use PC-Free on the ALGP, the lights around the button flash red then blue which means error of some kind?
I thinks the only way to get the ALGP to work in PC-FREE mode would be to use a DVI & S/PDIF Digital Coax/Optical Toslink Audio to HDMI® Converter ?
Update :- Tried a different SD Card, now works fine in PC-FREE Modehttps://forum.videohelp.com/threads/334145-HDCP-strippers?p=2293266&viewfull=1#post2293266

And how does this compare to the Elegato Game Capture, and whatever other competing units may be out there, such as those from Hauppauge ? (I've asked this before, without getting an answer.) Specs, performance, what they each do or don't do in comparison to each other. Usefulness of associated software. My question concerns using these for capturing HD video -- most likely from a sat or cable receiver box -- rather than any (intended) use for gaming, Xbox, PS_whatever, and so forth. Some sort of standalone type of capture scenario, since I don't have any laptop with a faster cpu or sufficient HDD storage, at the moment.
When in Las Vegas, don't miss the Pinball Hall of Fame Museum http://www.pinballmuseum.org/ -- with over 150 tables from 6+ decades of this quintessentially American art form.

hi all. not sure how/if this qualifies or not. but after finally getting my roxio gamecap hd pro working, i've been testing it out in different scenarios, i.e., using my already hooked up toshiba dr430 dvd recorder for the hdmi and component connections on the roxio since it utilizes both.
the capture scenarios, when setting on the dr430 (480p, 720p, and 1080i) and capturing at any of those resolutions, the default bitrates are 480p/3Mbps, 720p/8Mbps and 1080i/15Mbps. due to my current desktop pc limitations, i am unable to change those bitrates when using graphstudio.
dvd movie Tron -> toshiba dr430[hdmi] -> [hdmi]roxio -> video.h264
while testing using the above scenarios, i didn't realize that i may have stumbled on this equipments setup to bypass hdcp in this mannor. not sure if that is what i was actually doing all along and didn't realize it. anyway. one of the test scenarios was with using the disney dvd movie, Tron and using the roxio to capture off the dr430 using hdmi connections.
can someone clarify if this setup did bypass hdcp ?

I just got the ViewHD VHD-1X2MN3D yesterday, based on what has been talked about here. It works perfectly with my DirecTV box. Perfect! Just wanted to add another success story with that device.
I don't own any game consoles so I don't know how that would go, but I imagine it would be the same result.

I haven't been able to get the live gamer portable working in pc free mode recording directly from sky hd > LGP > SD card ? I get the lights around the button flashing red blue red blue meaning error. However I can stream video to laptop via the hdmi then capture using Avermedia Software.
Can you explain how you got the LGP to record to the SD Card?
Thanks
-
Yes to all above
I've recorded from the ps3 using the ps3 cable supplied using pc free mode, just won't record directly via hdmi to the sdcard.
I've got a DVI + Optical to HDMI converter box which may/hope will work in pc free mode ?

Just a note for owners of the original Hauppauge HD-PVR:
I recall on another thread jagabo saying that you don't need an HDCP stripper to capture HDCP protected content with the *original* Hauppauge HD-PVR (component inputs), as it does not honor HDCP. I can confirm that. I can capture from a Roku2 (HDMI output) just fine.
You do need an HDMI to component converter, but be careful which one you get. This one works:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00B7GD44A/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
This one will *NOT* work, so steer clear:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008HZT8SA/ref=oh_details_o02_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Yes, I bought and tested both of the above. Sent the latter one back today.
I did get a CVID splitter/stripper though. I plan on finally getting a new receiver with HDMI, and I'll need to split the Roku output. And who knows, my HD-PVR may die and I'd probably get an HD-PVR2. Anyway, I got the 1x4 big brother to the 1x2 unit, which has been out of stock for the better part of a month. This one:

does hdcp apply only to satellite / cable tv type content ?
or are there different flavors of HDCP or other video playback restriction ?
well, it seems that hdcp is ignored on the "roxio gamecap hd pro" card via composite and hdmi. i was able to play and capture some 480i and 1080i video from a farcaspe bluray disc with no problems.
i got the philips bluray player as a tool for the purpose of gauging this sort of stuff. not sure if there are any other way of testing these things.
-
It applies to almost all HDMI devices. The major exception is HD camcorders -- because Hollywood doesn't care about your video.
HDCP is encryption that only applies to digital signals. There are copy-none and copy-once flags that can be applied to analog video, CGMS-A.
HDCP would only apply to the HDMI capture. CGSM-A would apply to the composite capture. Either the capture device is ignoring the restrictions, or the particular player you're using isn't requiring HDCP or adding CGSM-A to the analog output.
Were you recording an AACS encrypted commercial Blu-ray disc? HDCP might not be required when playing non-AACS encrypted Blu-ray discs.

honestly jagabo, i don't know. i was using the 15 anniversary editition of Farscape, the complete season one disc. it is a 5 disc set on bluray that i found last week at walmart. popped it in my new philips bluray player (BDP2105/F7) via hdmi -> roxio gamecap hd pro to test hdcp compliance. the video recorded successfully. only caviet is, mediainfo reports it as 25 fps. unless the player does both NTSC and PAL perfectly. i know at some point (first two seasons were pal but later were film) but i though they would have been framerate converted to 24p, but now i'm not sure with so many "special edition" versions out there and this new (HD/Bluray) video medium, i can't be sure. let me know if you need anything else.
thanks for all the insights. here is a clip from the roxio capture device for your review and library.
ps: i used the following to snip out a section losslessly i hope, and then renamed it in the attached file.
Code:ffmpeg -ss 00:2:44 -i "h:\roxio_video.ts" -vcodec copy -acodec copy -t 00:00:15 -y "h:\video.ts"
