There is no reason to permanently store the captured file. If you absolutely needed lossless, then lossless x264 could crunch it down further at a slow speed.
And since no one actually needs true lossless, 100Mbps or 200Mbps AVC is more than enough for visually lossless.

I don't permanently store the 1080i raw capture files. Since I haven't invested in a Blu-ray player or burner (yet) I only keep the raw file around as long as it takes me to convert to 720x480 and encode and author a SD disk. The cost of Blu-ray blank disks is more that I'm willing to tolerate at the current time, plus authoring programs for BLu-ray are also more expensive than I'm willing to pay. My wife grumbles about how much computer equipment and software I have, so I've been cooling it for a while. The most recent "improvement" was to a Quad Intel system. Maybe in the future I'll reconsider the Blu-ray stuff. Part of my disgust with BR has to do with Sony. I boycott them every chance I get.
I use 3-Western Digital WD Black WD1002FAEX 1TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drives configured as a Raid 0 configuration using a HighPoint RocketRaid 2721 SAS controller with adapter cables to SATA (internal) and E-SATA. I also have an 2 port E-SATA external enclosure with an additional 8 drives (all WD1002FAEX HDs). One 3x-Raid 0, 2-2x-Raid 0, and 1 single drive. I capture to the 3x-Raid 0's. I have the Raid 0's configured across the two ports to allow better interleaving and up the band width to/from the external enclosure. I am able to use the 6Gb/s xfer rate on the 3 internal drives. For the external enclosure the internal interface is only 3Gb/s to the drives. I use the 2x-RAID 0 to improve encode times. The single drive I use for other storage. The 3x-RAID0 configurations are limited to a single partition of 2TB since I run mostly under XP and there is a max drive size limitation of 2TB so I lose some drive space on the 3x configurations. If I ever switch over exclusively to Win7 I'll probably configure them to use all 3TBs.
I have to confess I have 2 seasons of Eureka that I still have to encode and author so I still have a lot of the available drive space pigged up holding those and other files waiting for me to get the lead out of my britches. Those I have converted to intermediate 720x480 files that way they only(?) take up about 35Gbs for each episode.
I hope this helps. If you need anymore detailed info please free to PM me and if you're willing to supply a e-mail address we can take the discussion off-line and handle the info via E-mail.

Wait, you invest all the time, money, and hardware into being able to capture lossless HDMI and then crunch it down into tiny SD DVD??
May I recommend the name of my psychotherapist?
Geez man, buy a 3TB hard drive for under $150, plug it in, encode to say 20Mbps AVC using x264 and be done with it. Discs aren't necessary. Buy a $100 media steamer if you want to have easy access to the files.

Yep,
Good one!You miss the point, when capturing raw 1920x1080i you need a raid array to handle the data rate. That was the primary intent of the note. I agree a server would also be an alternative.
Under XP a 3TB drive can only be configured as a 2Tb drive. Yes I could exclusively use Win 7, but some of the s/w I have doesn't run under Win 7. I could probably copy to a 3TB drive configured under Win 7 from the drives configured for XP.
Hard drives will fail one doesn't know when. That can be mitigated by keeping back ups. I have DVDs that I done that are at least 10 yrs or more (if you use quality media). Also the SD format is one I can share with friends i.e. loan them the DVD.
The better source you start with, the better the encode results are even if you compress to SD. I have the large amount of disk storage because I'm slovenly about getting rid of old data. I can stream to my TV from my PC via ethernte I haven't looked at that for quite a while. I think the TV server software for the TV will accommodate X264 format.
The streaming I will get around to one of these days like a bunch of other things. Also messing around with PCs is a hobby albeit an expensive one, I like to tinker.
Cheers,

Enough is enough!
In case I wasn't clear it's a HOBBY! Different strokes for different folks. My situation does not prevent me from doing what you suggest.
Maybe you missed this part:

I received the new MUX-FHD VF01 Video Formatter from Moome yesterday. It works exactly as expected. I have not had any A-V sync issues when recording in HD. The two cheaper versions mentioned earlier in this thread (post #122) and demonstrated in the You Tube videos may work equally well for less $, but I'm very, very happy with the MUX-FHD.

I'm looking for a way to get the new HDMI SlingBox 500 to work with my HTPC.
(Mac Mini, HDMI Windows 8 Media Center Ceton CableCard tuner, no premium channels)
If you know of a device that would make this work, that would be killer! This thread sounds like the most promising. The HDMI to Analog and back to HDMI is a bit over the top. I'd rather hold out for something a bit more simple. I couldn't find anything on eBay yet.
Here's where I'm at:

I think the key is to make sure any splitter, STRIPS the HDCP signal that I would output into the non-HDCP compliment HDMI slingbox.
So output #1 Full regular HDCP to HDMI TV and output #2 HDCP Free to HDMI SlingBox 500
Does this sound like the best way?

Hi vaporeon800,
I would like to get a hold of the HDMI splitter you mentioned here. I sent you a PM.
I'd appreciate your help please.
By the way, thanks to all the posters on this thread and this forum for such a wealth of knowledge and great advice. I am learning a lot and stumbled onto this site searching for capture devices and I'm glad I found this place.

I just sent PM as well. new user here. i was thinking of this device from amazon to use for my vizio vbr337 blu-ray player:
http://www.amazon.com/Monoprice-MYCH01-Component-Stereo-Converter/dp/B007MD4HGG/ref=cm...pr_product_top
anyone known of anything that works for the vizio vbr337?
thanks!

I have that exact device, and when pulling 1080i from my digital cable box, there is a black bar down the right side of the screen, approx 5% of the screen width. Nothing on the left is cut off, it's like letter box, but only on the right side
Using my Black Magic Intensity Pro I can crop the picture so that it looks normal, but it's for sure causing me issues trying to get everything the way I want

I was looking at that same box for use with my slingbox and htpc media center. The shift to the left is common. Its discontinued as of a few weeks ago and out of stock everywhere now as well. We might have to she'll out the big bucks for a higher quality one. Here is a response I got from an expert connection.

"I’d recommend the Moome EXT-FULLHD v3. It also supports the latest HDMI 1.4 standard. It’s only available directly from the manufacturer at www.moomecard.com.
I've used one myself with my Barco Cine 8 Onyx projector and it works very well."
HDFury3 or HDfury4 is just as expensive

I guess if we're letting the cat out of the bag I will link to the better deal I found for US residents on the 1x4 splitter:
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0089DVCT8/
$35 with no waiting for shipping from China. Free 3-5 day or 2-day Prime shipping fulfilled by Amazon themselves. I've got one coming from Phoenix.

If anyone is interested, Here's my long battle to get the new SlingBox 500 working with my MacMini Windows 8 Media Center Cable Card DVR system.

It wasn't easy! But I don't mind a good tech challenge.
