There is nothing you can use to reconstruct the face that is obscured. The video has been changed, there is no overlay that can be removed, and there is nothing left to recover. The whole point of doing this is to hide someone's identity, permanently.

Some pedophile took snaps of himself having sex with kids, he used a Photoshop "swirl" filter to obscure his face when he posted them to his buddies.

Unfortunately for him, Swirl can be reversed.

This kind of extreme pixellation can't be though. The data hasn't just been distorted, it's been lost.

However; there is a kind of "masking" used in Japanese porn, so they can publish naughty pictures that look blurred, but can be reversed to reveal the original image. See http://hp.vector.co.jp/authors/VA013065/Lunmasking_e.htm
But you have to use the correct GMask method to "mask" and "unmask".
It's clear by the size of the blocks in the sample image that it's not of this type.

Or maybe you were thinking of this method: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KUFkb0d1kbU

Looks interesting, even if the soft is a little outdated. AlanHK, those DL links are no good now, do you know of any alternate places to get a copy?

    There's an archive site here

I used GMask myself when I was testing this, but it was along time ago.
Note that Gmsk170E.exe.zip has an English interface, other versions are probably Japanese.

  10. That type of masking can be partially undone if you have enough video with simple motion. At least, in theory. I don't know of any software that does it though.
