Computer shuts down during conversion!

Ok here is my problem. I'm am using Virtual Dub to convert some divx files. After the conversion has began and has been going a little while, my computer just shuts down. No warnings or anything. It doesn't feel hot so I don't think its overheating. Does anyone know what could be wrong? I would be so thankful for any help. Thx, in advance.

What is your OS?

I use Windows 98 SE. And just another note, the same thing occurs when I try to use TMPEGenc too.

I think it is overheating. Especially since you said your heatsink is not hot. If your cpu and your heat sink do not make good contact, the CPU will get too hot and the heatsink will not. Try using some thermal grease and cleaning out all the dirt/dust on the fan and heat sink

yeah, if it does it whenever there is a load on the cpu then i would say its 99% chance it is heat related.
