Does your amp and tv both have hdmi? If so connect the hdmi out from the laptop to the amp then the hdmi out from the amp to the tv.

Otherwise if your amp doesn't have hdmi and you still want 5.1 audio (sd not hd - hd can't go over fiber optic) then connect the hdmi out to the tv and use a fiberoptic output from your laptop to the amp fiberoptic input. If your laptop doesn't have a dedicated fiber optic or coaxial digital output you will need to get a soundcard for laptops that does have one. The newest usb device from creative labs is creative xfi usb. THere may be a newer one that I don't know about but that should get you fiberoptic out. THen in your software movie player select spdif out to get the digital surround sound.

  3. I don't think his amp has an HDMI input, but it has optical and coaxial. It would help if he specified what display he's using, but if it's a TV and it has an optical or coaxial output, then just hook that up to the DZ777. Connect the laptop and receiver to the TV with HDMI and use the TV to switch between the inputs.

If the TV doesn't have digital outputs, but has RCA out; he could use that. Wouldn't get DD or DTS surround, but might still be able to use matrix surround.

I don't think the tv will forward the digital surround from the optical out. I could be mistaken about that though. It might just pass stereo through its optical out if its from the input and not the tv itself sending the surround.

But thats a good point to mention as another option.

  5. It may vary from brand to brand, but that's the way I usually setup systems for people. It saves having to click too many remotes as all the playback devices go through the TV and only one signal goes to the amp; the amp can stay on the same input all the time. Some TV remotes are multi function and will let you assign the volume control keys to the amp in all modes.

As for the surround pass through, it's just a question of setting it correctly between all the devices (raw/PCM).
