  1. Hi, i have a vc500 laying around and just want to get some video on to my pc. i have used the regular composite cables to do so but i know svideo has a bit better quality and was wondering how i can convert to do so.

I'd imagine that composite to s-video doesnt do anything to quality but i was wondering about using my xbox 360 vga cables and getting something to conver it to svideo or component to svideo or hdmi to svideo. i need some alternative, would perfer to be some what cheap.

    Thank you!

  2. Search for VGA to s-video scan converters. For example:

Cheap models may not work as well as capturing composite directly from the Xbox 360. Or they may not accept higher resolutions.

Passive (non-electronic) composite to s-video converters are horrible. Expect to pay at least $150 or more for a standalone worth its salt, or you're better off sticking to composite. Meanwhile the s-video outputs on many dvd recorders do a much better job of this conversion, so you might try hooking thru a dvd recorder as a pass=thru device and use its output to feed your capture device. Works for me every time.

What is the device you are recording from? If this is a VHS recorder there is no point to convert to S-Video. The first thing the capture device does is split composite into Y and C. If you want a better quality split, you buy a better capture device. Better to use an S-VHS recorder that reads Y and C separately from tape then outputs Y/C separately as S-Video.

As for the XBox 360, there should be an S-Video output cable for it.

A higher quality conversion from analog component or VGA is going to be expensive. Better to buy a capture device for SD analog component or HD.

All correct, edDV, thanks for clarifying. I'm thinking in terms of having more components in the capture chain (TBC, proc amp, etc). Going straight in from the source there's no sense in converting to s-video, it would just get in the way.
