I am staring a documentary course where we will use Final Cut Pro to edit . I want a semi professional camera that records on card that i can edit straght wit FCP avoiding any file conversions. my bucget is around $5000 to $8000 . I was looking at Sony nx5p but i believe i need to do a file conversion before i can edit which is a drag. I am a newbie so any help would be appreciated

Smurf could you expand please on your reply. I really need some advice on whether there is a camera that i can get that needs no conversion to FCP and if so what would it be? If there isnt one then let me know.

The JVC GY-HM100U (~$2795) transfers direct as MPeg2 *.mov or *.mp4 but that doesn't mean no recode. FCP isn't a smart encoding MPeg editor. If that is your priority, look at GVG Edius or Sony Vegas Pro.

There are rumors of a new MPeg (MPeg2 and AVC) native FCP this April at NAB. We shall see.

Assuming this happens, expect CPU requirements to be rather extreme. Not for Grandma's MacBook Pro.
