So, I got a AG-DV1000P MiniDV deck from eBay. After installing the legacy IEEE1394 driver in Win7, I captured an hour of DV video from a tape via Firewire, and it worked great. Unplugged the deck and set it aside to do some other stuff.

Now today, I can't get my PC to see the deck! I checked the firewire port on my computer by connecting my HM-DH40000U to it, and the PC end of the firewire connection is fine, so I guess it's the deck.

Anyone have any ideas? It's weird that it would randomly stop working. There doesn't seem to be a setting for the firewire port on the 1000P, so it should just *work* :/

Are you talking about a motherboard driver here? Win7 needs no specific driver.

Try the deck on another computer to separate deck vs PC issues.

The main danger for the deck IEEE-1394 port is electrostatic burn out or ground issues. Power down before connection and make sure deck and PC are on the same grounded power strip.

I guess it would be the motherboard driver. I did what was described here: http://kc.flexradio.com/KnowledgebaseArticle50433.aspx

I need to get one of my other computers up and running... but I suspect the firewire port is just fried. Third firewire device this has happened to me with :/ And I'm pretty careful with electronics...

There are many reports of fried ports (expensive to repair) but I've never experienced one. I have experienced big sparks or shocks from ground loops. My best guess is the deck is OK and it is a PC issue.

If not, repair will be expensive

  5. FWIW, I have been doing MiniDV capturing under Windows 7 x64 with WinDV for the past week with the default drivers and no issues at all. Even hooked up a DVHS machine and it worked fine via firewire too. Legacy drivers certainly aren't needed, but firewire was always kinda wonky to work with under Windows.

Well, I had captured from a DVHS deck prior to "downgrading" the driver and it worked fine. But with the current deck, I found that while I could control the deck via firewire, I couldn't obtain the video stream. I looked around and found the legacy 1394OHCI driver suggestion, tried it, and I was then able to successfully capture from the deck...

The fact that it was working previously, and that my DVHS deck STILL works with my PC makes me think it's the deck, not the PC. After work I'll dig out another computer though and see if I have any luck getting a connection on that machine.

No video suggests a DirectShow issue.

    MiniDV needs a DV codec
    DVHS needs an MPeg2 codec
