  1. I am in the process of importing my old MiniDVs tapes with Win DV/firewire into my old PC (XP bases) and then to external drive, because I am about to buy a new PC without the firewire port.

My old PC is formatted as FAT32 therefore each 13gb AVI file is splitted in at least four pieces. Do you see this as an issue for storing my files, and can AVI files be esily joined once I will buy a new PC?

should I then continue to back up my MiniDV tapes this way or should I wait and buy a new PC with firewire? Thank you very much

what do you think it is better do do?

As long as your new pc has one free pci slot you can buy an inexpensive firewire pc card. Than you can do direct captures to a single file on the new pc.

But you should be able to join them together with virtualdub. Just use direct stream copy so as to not reencode them at all. It should be as simple as loading each one and appending them and then saving as a new single file.
